No Jane Hill this week, she's covering for Jeremy Vine on R2.

Fiona Armstrong did the 8:30-11 shift with Simon McCoy as well.

Hope this doesn't mean she's moving away from news.

Why exactly would her covering for another presenter during holidays mean that? She's done, and still does, plenty of radio broadcasting for the BBC, and has also appeared on BBC World News. This kind of thing probably makes up for the time she previously spent presenting on BBC one bulletins.

I agree it would be a shame if she left BBC News - she's very good.

You and your red links, DVB.

And I believe so - should be an interesting watch. I certainly think Laura is one of the ones to watch for - if not political editor at some point then on a programme like this.

Kirsty Lang on BBC World News Today, yesterday! Haven't seen her around for a very long time. Also Claire Marshall reported from Birmingham too on the same programme. Has she given up newscasting completely?

I've just tuned in to Newsnight and it's being presented by Laura Kuenssberg. How long has she been presenting Newsnight? I haven't seen her do it before. I just searched the BBC website and she's been on the Westminster beat, politics, blogging when Nick Robinson's away and stuff, is this the first time she's presented Newsnight?

While she was doing the intro bit, I thought she was a bit shouty and overemphasising pronunciation and her head was wobbling a bit too much, and I instinctively thought 'Oh no, oh dear...'

But I was impressed with the way she steered and managed the three-way about the proposed New York 'Ground Zero' mosque and Islamic cultural centre, which actually two blocks away from the site. One of the guests was Brad Blakeman, a talking head who pops up in other places as a commentator and he's notoriously shouty and ranty and difficult to control and cut off. She did rather well, I thought.

A bit too soon to to pass judgement either way, but looking good so far.

Yes, this was her first go at Newsnight, she'll be presenting tomorrow as well.

Personally I didn't think she was too bad, although she was very abrupt in cutting off the guests, she was also a bit shouty but by the end seemed to have settled in a bit more.

I'd rather have her as Political Editor and Nick Robinson on Newsnight if that's the choice.

Laura was very good tonight - just the right balance. She is certainly climbing the BBC News foodchain and quite rightly so.

It would be good to see more of a mix of presenters as it keeps the programme fresh.

Will look forward to seeing Laura again tomorrow night.

(And in other news... just a quick point - interesting to see that Lynn Parsons has been covering Sarah Kennedy on Radio 2 this week. Will Sarah ever return? Is it just me that thinks that her continual absence is a bit odd? - didn't start a new topic as this is a site for discussing TV and not radio but wanted to mention it!!)
