I wouldn't say it's limited to 24 hour news channels either, Newsnight regularly has interviews with "people who make the news", sometimes as many as 5 - 6 per show.

Why do presenters on main news programmes no longer interview people. They talk to correspondents, but no-one else.

To me, live interviews with people who make the news is an essential part of broadcast news, but today it's limited to 24 hour news channels.

Outside the One O'Clock News in the early 00s - "real people" live interviews have seldom been a feature on BBC One bulletins. Most live interviews on bulletins are between 45" and 1'30" - which requires them to be quite structured in order to stay on time, and getting a succinct answer in that period from someone not used to speaking in soundbites would probably be tricky.

An exception is the "telly friendly expert" - such as academics - though specialist correspondents are probably used more than tame experts on the bulletins these days.

I'm sure back in the day - and it may be as far back as the 80s - they used to interview a fair number of politicians on bulletins.

Personally, I'm fed up to the back teeth of 'specialist correspondents' being 'interviewed' by presenters. It's lazy and boring. Obviously, for the reasons you mention, this is going to be the main type of interview, but getting a real person on at least once per bulletin would give it some variety.

Agreed - and isn't it a far better programme as a result.

This was very interesting but I wonder why Huw didn't present the Ten...

Perhaps he realised he'd left the tap on and had to rush home?

As I mentioned on another thread, we've had the same newscaster on duty today on BBC World for the last ten consecutive hours and he is still going at this moment. Can anyone guess who???

I'll buy a glass of Shiraz for anyone who can guess correctly.

As someone who now watches overnights, he usually presents Saturdays and also Mondays & Tuesdays should Martine Croxall not be around. By the way, has Kasia Madera been dropped in favour of Babita Sharma?
