There are hardly any female correspondents in hot spots. I can think only of Orla Guerin in Pakistan and Caroline Wyatt, at Defence. There are lots of women in social affairs, however. Caroline Hawley was in Baghdad for a while a year ago but seems to have disappeared.

I've not seen much of her of late, but Lyse Doucet?

Our Lyse is anchoring on World tonight in London, filling-in for Nik Gowing and George Alagiah (the latter because he is in Haiti).

Lyse is marv.

I actually think it's far more important than that.
Men's work: war / natural disaster reporting.
Women's work: look pretty and read the auto-cue for 60 seconds on BBC1.
On the BBC News at Ten there are hardly any female correspondents who appear regularly (watch it this week and look at the ratio). There are hardly any female correspondents in hot spots. I can think only of Orla Guerin in Pakistan and Caroline Wyatt, at Defence. There are lots of women in social affairs, however. Caroline Hawley was in Baghdad for a while a year ago but seems to have disappeared.
It's not just a case of getting older women to present the news - it's a case of sexism, pure and simple. It appears there's a very male culture at BBC News where women are not valued as journalists and correspondents. There are plenty of women working in the BBC but why aren't they allowed on the front line (and I'm not just talking about war)? Where's the Kate Adie of 2010?
Oh, today it's Ellie Crissell and she's reading the autocue at 8pm on BBC1. Isn't she pretty?

And there's an equal amount of sexism, with no male presenters doing the 60 second summaries.

Tim Wilcox is at it again. He was in the morning shift on BBC World with Lucy Hockings (8-11), then filled in for Nick Gowing (4-7.30) and now I see him on News Channel with Joanna. Surprised Shocked

Shocked to see in the Radio Times today that Bill and Sian are down to present Breakfast on Friday as well as Monday - Thursday, also Mishal Husain is down to present the News at Ten on Friday.

There'll be the need for big hitters on Friday, Wall-to-Wall Tony Blair at the Iraq Inquiry from dawn to dusk (and beyond) is to be expected.

Will be interesting to see if that happens - they sometimes get it wrong - they had Huw down for Mon-Thur of last week but that all changed! It will be good if Mishal does Friday!
