I like Kate. I honestly don't see why so many people have a problem with her!
Yes, maybe the 6 is a big gig for her, but she does a pretty good job.

That's the thing - I don't think she does. There's just something about the way she reads the autocue - her emphasis never seems quite right or her voice authoritative. I do think Sian, Sophie, Huw, Fiona, Bill or even Louise Minchin, not to mention countless others from the news channel, are much better!

Did Huw Edwards do the news at 5 today - if so they should have taken him off there and put him on the 6.

Disagree about downgrading the presentation (and presenter) of the Five in favour of the Six. The Six is a digest which can be handled by a lightweight in a less overt manner. The Five is a class hour on the NC which I feel keeps Huw, Emily, Gavin or whoever the presenter is alert and enables their expertise to shine through at length.

It has since it's invention become my ATV News programme of choice.

But if you had the choice between Kate presenting the six and Huw the five or Huw the six and Gavin or Emily the five surely Huw on the six would be the better choice?

No, the Six imo is less important in the agenda than the Five. The Six isn't as complex a programme, has at the most one presenter to reporter two way, consists of Narration/Report/Narration etc. The Five however is by far the more complex programme structure and deserves the 'better' presenter.

However if the discussion is between the Five and the Ten then the Ten naturally would win out, The fact that BOTH are shared by Huw normally, reflects this decision by the BBC.

AFAIC the Five is now the second most important BBC News Agenda programme.

Matthew Price has just arrived in Port-au-Prince. Is he the first UK TV reporter there?

EDIT: Andy Gallagher there too according to the BBC's live updates page

Is Huw the only one whoever does the five and ten, as if he's not on the Ten it's usually a senior News Channel presenter on the Five, and not Fiona Bruce for example. (I'm assuming she's still his understudy!)

Anyhow, this has probably been discussed over 17 pages earlier in the thread, but have they now dropped the countdown and like Sky just playing the weather in the lead up to the hour as the last few times I've caught the news channel on the hour they've cut straight from the weather to the headlines in the studio - which looks kind of messy without some kind of sting in between.

The news agenda is 'busy' as a result the weather start is delayed and therefore the countdown isn't being used as much as it can be.

Impressed with Clive Myrie tonight. He seems to have settled in well as a News Channel presenter.

I did wonder if he was going because Sophie has covered the news at 6 for the past two nights
