Or if they had given Moira Stuart the role of weekend newsreader properly rather than in name only
Yea...that would have been the best option!
It did seem strange that they obviously had told her that she would be presenting the bulletins on Saturdays before she left Breakfast in April 2006 as she mentioned it during her farewell chat. She didn't actually present a set of Saturday bulletins until the start of October (6 months later) where, obviously, she was only on screen for about 2 1/2 months more.
They should've kept her for weekends - or even occasionak cover for a weekday bulletin (The 1, 6 and 10 don;t really need many journalistic credentials and she was more that capable - I'd rather see her than George any day!!
)
Indeed they should have kept Moira as a proper weekend presenter, like what Darren Jordon used to do.
Given that she's gone now then I'd have Peter Sissons on the weekend bulletins, presenting the lunch, evening and late bulletins on Saturday and Sunday leaving the Andrew Marr update to the Breakfast presenter. Peter is much better suited to structured bulletins, as was demonstrated again yesterday, than rolling news. However, it appears that those at the BBC fail to see this and let him bumble through the News Channel every weekend.

Actually, in the interests of giving the bulletins a true identity, it would be a great idea if Peter Sissons became the weekend newscaster on BBC1 bulletins (3 on Saturday / 4 on Sunday).

Actually, I disagree that he should be given weekend bulletins - personally I'd rather he was simply dropped altogehter (though I'd have no problem with him continuing to cover for Andrew Marr). Now that's probably a little harsh considering all his years of service and it won't happen as it would be seen as ageism, but his job is to anchor the news channel and he fails to do it properly. There's no point giving him the weekend bulletins as having other presenters from the week doing them, rather than paying wages for a seperate presenter, is a much better use of resources at a time when savings must be made.

In theory yes - whether the likes of Jane Hill, Ben Brown etc. would agree to come in at weekends to do the less high profile NC rather than BBC One when they already have NC shifts during the week is another matter.

Could they not use Peter Sissons for weekend bulletins, and have his duties on the news channel taken over by the presenters who would be presenting the networked bulletins - the effect being cost neutral.

That's a good point actually. Jane Hill normally tends to do NC Bank Holidays but then again I bet the pay is a bit different for a Bank Holiday than it is a Saturday or Sunday.

Yes, just like its a perpetual tradition that Kay Burley does Sunrise every Christmas Morning on Sky News, since the dawn of time.........
I remember the years when it was always "secondary" presenters (Jan, Moira, Sue, Jill (RIP) ) who generally did the Christmas and Holiday bulletins. Then, all of a sudden, when the BBC introduced the seven-nights Ten o'clock News (previously the Nine), suddenly the heavyweights (Buerk, Sissons, Witchell, Lewis) started to appear not only at weekends, but also on Christmas Day and New Years day, etc.
I wonder why.......

Interesting combination on the 11 to 2 shift today Workaholicocks and Hill. They seem to be ok, and bouncing stories between them well.
Nice discussion about people staying awake for the Sopel Crewe and Natwich by-election results programme due at 0050 on Friday. Jane saying that you can't stay up two nights in a row for fooball and politics and unsurprisingly Workaholicocks denying this and suggesting coffee and coke should do the trick.
