They must be really short of Male presenters on BBC news today!! - Sophie Long and Carrie Gracie on together this morning and Carrie has stayed on at 11am but has been joined by Kasia Madera.
I was hoping for a Tanya Beckett and Geeta Guru-Murty female pairing as well on today's World double-header shifts, after seeing Tanya doing the first two solo hours of the segment. Alas, Jonathan Charles has turned-up to co-host with Tanya after all for the next two hours. And, surprisingly, he is wearing a pink shirt!
I think it's always a paring of Jonathan and Geeta on Fridays but since Geeta was doing the whole week (filling in for Lucy) then Tania filled in for her.
This article says that Juliet Somerville, Fiona Armstrong and Zeinab Badawi are apparently amongst the four newsreaders over 50 that the BBC wish to sign. Of course, Zeinab is only seen in the UK on BBC Four on World News Today. It would be great to see her on a national bulletin. I think she is immensely talented and really deserves a high ranking in the BBC News staff.
In my opinion, some of the National News presenters are only average (take Natasha Kaplinsky, who isn't outstanding). Zeinab has proved herself over the years to be a very competent, versatile journalist. It would be exciting for the BBC to change the faces of the national news around a little. It is quite boring after so long to see Huw, George, Sophie or Fiona doing them.
They are to be trialled on the News Channel, and given national bulletins if they prove successful.
Zeinab................and really deserves a high ranking in the BBC News staff.

LOL. Zeinab already is very high-ranking within the BBC News staff and I think that she and Julia Somerville would be offended to be sent to network after "proving successful on the News Channel."
I somehow think ZB may well be quite happy to remain at World with the wide-ranging role she has. Moving her across to BBC domestic output would probably only be appealing if it were to be the new Dimbleby. Otherwise, she already commands tremendous global exposure and seniority in her current role.
In fact, having now read the Daily Mail article attached to the original post, it is a complete load of c**p and totally offensive to the referred "candidates". BBC National News is incredibly "tame" compared to some of the stuff these great ladies have handled in their news careers. Many of them would see it as a demotion rather than a high level promotion.

You are so right. I read the same article and I felt is was a load of crap. I doubt BBC bosses will remove Zeinab from World. She is the most senior person there and has so many wide ranging roles and duties that It will be insult and embarrassing for any boss to tell her we want you to go on the news channel and prove youself. She might as well leave the BBC. The new program line up for the new year on World has Zeinab fronting the only Wordl News Today program which has been extended and I doubt they will do that if she is going on the news channel to prove herself worthy of national news. They did that same thing with Mishal after her successful sting in Washington and she utimately came back to BBC WORLD, where she is an international star.
Agreed. There is a huge difference from presenting a formal BBC1-style bulletin and presenting rolling news. Fiona Armstrong has never done that. I know Julia Sommerville did a bit of that at the ITN News Channel... but they could be very exposed. I find it ridiculous to be harking back to old names like these from the 80s and 90s (with the exception of ZB) and not be developing and keeping older talent on air. And it goes to show how shallow the pool is to choose from because so many women have found their careers grinding to a halt when they reach 40.
FroDrom a BBC point of view would it not make sense to use Maxine Mawhinney more effectively? Say cover for the news at 1 or a regular news channel slot?
I often thought Zeinab would be good on the Ten, or Newsnight. However, if this is true, and they will become anchors on the News Channel, presumably that will mean certain others will be sidelined? Perhaps a revamp of the presenting teams? Always seems silly to me to have the One, then whoever was presenting the 11-1 shift come back for half an hour...surely it would make more sense to just keep the presenter of the One on until 2pm?
