If I'm honest this sounds like the BBC bosses have suddenly realised they need a woman who's 50+ for next year to meet Mr Thompson's expectations but now can't find anyone other than their old pal Moira? (Don't get me wrong, I like Moira, but I'm sure there are countless other female newsreaders over 50?!)

I can't think why else they would be 'desperate' to have Moira back after the way she left!

It was Rachel and Tim on Monday.

On female newsreaders over 50: If, and it's a big if, Wiki is to be believed, Louise Minchin is just over 50!

If that was the case then the BBC would have made a big deal about it when Mark Thompson announced the hiring of an older woman - Kirsty Walk, Maxine Mawhinney and (I think) Martha Kearney were listed as being older female presenters still going strong.

No way she's 50!! Late 30s or early 40s at the most I'd say.

Wikipedia suggests Martha was born in 1957... No idea if it is true - and I hate posting about ladies' ages.

Louise Minchin obviously isn't. Late 30s / Early 40s would make sense for Louise. (Her wikipedia page now says she was born in 1988. She did a very good job presenting News 24 when she was 9 or 10...)

I am 39, if anyone's interested.

(And I know that none of you are interested in my age. But it always fails to amaze me why anyone is concerned about the age of anyone else, in this case a television presenter and - in particular - linking this to their and their gender to job ability and credibility. It's a big pile of nonsense).

It's Carrie and Sophie this morning...

In the early days of News 24 it wasn't that unusual to have an all-male pairing; David Roberton and Chris Eakin sometimes presented Breakfast together - as it had a 7 day rota with three presenters. (Sarah Montague, and then Jane Hill , was the third)

I think the main point in this particular argument is, however, is how she has kept herself looking so young if she is that age.
