ITN used to make a point of deliberately alternating many of its personnel between presenting and reporting to illustrate to the audience that the newsreaders weren't just parroting off an autocue, so people like Michael Nicholson would spend time newsreading in between reporter postings, although I know Nicholson didn't much enjoy it.

As a point of difference with the BBC who were using people with acting or announcing backgrounds to read the news (Kenneth Kendall, Moira Stuart, Richard Baker etc)

There was a snippet of Peter Woods as a BBC reporter in 1963 in a documentary about the Profumo affair a couple of weeks ago. I'd always thought he was an 'actor' style BBC newsreader, but reading up on him, he was indeed a journalist. (And also as discovered quite recently, Justin Webb's father)

For those remotely interested, I'm chatting to Ben Ando (who recently departed BBC News) on my Saturday Breakfast show on Cambridge 105 Radio tomorrow from 9:30am. Feel free to dip in if you want to.

If , eventually, the time comes for News at 6 to have a new permanent presenter, the only natural choice would be Sophie Raworth. As for 1, they could use whoever's on News Channel, if I'm not wrong it's Joanna Gosling who's in that slot and she would be a great choice for lunchtime news.

Wasn't Sophie Raworth the permanent presenter alongside George of the News at 6 in 2003?

What I would do is pair the Nine & One, Five & Ten?

She was, until 2005 when Natasha Kaplinsky took over when Sophie went on maternity leave and Sophie (after returning from maternity) moved to the One to replace the retiring Anna Ford.

Would make more sense to pair the One & Five/Six & Ten.

Programmes don't necessarily need pairing. You could achieve similar results with job sharing if staff wanted it.

For those who didn't catch it, I had Ben Ando on my radio show this morning talking about an array of stories he covered at BBC News and ITV News. We also touch upon the recent Alastair Stewart Twitter storm. You can listen to it here: https://cambridge105.co.uk/saturday-breakfast-with-matt-webb-ben-ando-080220/

Nicely done, Worzel. Good interview. I like that you seized the opportunity to ask him about Alastair since he has met him previously. Must say, I completely agree with his sentiments; the way it was handled by ITN was ham-fisted at best and a disgrace at worst.
