Let's also not forget that he did his stint at the bottom of the ladder, too. I don't know his absolute origins but he was certainly a relief news presenter on BBC1 bulletins during the mid-1990s and had a stint as a correspondent for News 24 when it launched. He landed the Six job in 1999 after a lot of hard work and has built his career up since then. You can't say he hasn't pulled his weight. It's only like Trevor McDonald's summer hiatus at ITV News back in the day once he got the top job. And again, Trevor started on the lowly weekend bulletins, 5:40 News and as a secondary newsreader on Channel 4 News in the 1980s. It's not like these people have just waltzed into the top job with no prior effort.
Hwu Edwards who only presents on BBC World News during big stories, such as UK/US election night, state opening of parliament, trooping the colour, royal events, ETC

Sophie Raworth is back from her holiday after only a week or two, compared to Huw who's been off most of the summer. It's outrageous he holds the position of chief newsreader when there's others there far more than him, I bet he gets paid a lot more too. Him having other jobs away from the news is no excuse as Sophie has other jobs.
Huw is actually one of the hardest working in the business. With his news channel commitments, network commitments and stuff in between does he not deserve a holiday?
He's also one of the most lovely and funny people you could meet. He recently attended a charity gala night for a local rotary club too, which helped raise money for a charity I also work for.
And (believe it or not) he did extra in the 2nd half of April (aka 2 Sunday Evening Bulletins) whilst also rehearsing the for the Local Elections (as Clive Myrie was sent to Columbio when the attacks in Sri Lanka happened on Easter Sunday whilst on the latter Sunday, Mishal Husain was covering for Andrew Marr as that was they had the technical problems)

And of course it’s no different to Susanna and Piers, Lorraine, Holly and Phil. I don’t think I’ve seen Mary Nightingale during the 6 week holidays either, Andrew Marr isn’t on, back in the day Eamonn Holmes used to take about 3 months off from GMTV. In the world of entertainment Graham Norton disappears from both his chat show and radio show for months, the list goes on.

I’ve worked a couple of Sundays recently, not sure it allows me to then take 6 weeks off for the Summer though...
Surely he and the BBC are just keeping all his shifts until September-November, I believe something big is happening then!
He like all BBC news presenters are only contracted to do a number every year. Anything extra comes out of the News budget. No point in him presenting a Tuesday in July and then having to pay extra when he has gone over his contracted hours in November
When the A-team is off it means opportunities for the B-team. They may take holidays elsewhere in the year (but not to the extent of the A-team) but on the whole it looks like now for flagship stars a break as long as the holidays over the summer is quite common and as stated above most people have earned them by starting out at the bottom.
What I am surprised about is how Radio 1 have got away with giving all their A-team Fridays off when unlike TV that is not common at all in daytime radio both on commercial and BBC stations. I doubt they all took a 20% pay cut as a result either.
Ah, Huw Edwards. Now universally known at TVF as 'Huw'. He's reached the iconic status of single-name recognition: Cher. Lulu. Madonna. Beyonce. Tim.
I remember him way, way back in the day, as a Political Corry for BBC News, and occasional newsreader on the One O'clock News, before becoming an occasional sidekick for Anna Ford on the Six O'clock News (around the same time as Jennie Bond, Mike Smartt and Justin Webb sat in seat number 2).
Yes, I'm THAT old...............
Peter, Kenneth and Richard never had so much summer time off back in the day, mind you...........
It must be nice to be in that priveliged position going to work nine months of the year, get paid squillions and have a massive holiday in your own private tropical island, aah the life of the bbc star...

No, we didn't miss it. We're all still busy scouring our atlases to find out where Columbio is.
