From what I'm hearing Martha Carney and Mark Mardell are the only really creditable options at the mo.
But just to add a whole new dimension when John Simpson, World Affairs Editor, steps down I was told either Jeremy Bowen or Orla Gerin will take the helm.
I quite like Andy, his recent book was really quite interesting and John Simpson's A Mad World My Masters is one of my favs.
Joel.
Biscuits it is then.

I read in one of the papers that Mark Mardell is being tipped for the Europe Editor job.

I thought maybe Orla Guerin as Middle East editor and Matt Frei as World Affairs Editor. Presuming that Martha Kearney left Newsnight, they might simply promote political correspondent David Grossman to editor.

I hadn't thought of Martha Kearney being the Political Editor for BBC1, but she would be quite good. I like her - she delivers the facts, without trying to appeal to people or make a joke of it. Although I would hope she could still present Newsnight.

Wouldn't Lyse Doucet be a logical replacement for John Simpson when he steps down?
As for Europe Editor, I can't see Jeremy Bowen being too content with what could be quite a clinical Brussels-esque type role. I am far sure he would rather be out amidst the sniper fire and trenches, flak jacket etc.

No - Jeremy said he had enough of that before his first child was born - which was when he was presenting on Breakfast IIRC. Lyse isn't well known enough for UK viewers - so I immagine Jeremy will take World Editor - it was said that Mark Mardell would take on the Europe editor role, anyway - Jeremy wasn't in the frame for that role i don't think.

Who is the new home editor? I know that Margaret Gilmore was on the Home Staff, but I am not sure who the Editor is.
What about the veteran Bill Hamilton, who used to occupy correspondent positions in Home Affairs, World Affairs and Sport? Where has he gone to? Is he still around?
For the first time in years, I caught a report during the recent Pope death from Peter Gould. Is he still a regular on BBC News back in the UK?

Peter Gould is now Religious Affairs Correspondent for the BBC news website. He has filed the odd report over the last few weeks as he has been there for the last month or so reporting on the Pope
