Since Hutton, with the BBC's charter under review, and with budget cuts looming...I'd say the real number two is Number 10 Razz.

I'm not one to usually sound somewhat nasty but what utter twoodle.... The BBC is famed for its independence and still remains the most impartial broadcaster in the world.
Are you a BBC PR person? Otherwise you're a bit naive I'm afraid.

Guto Harri used to be the Chief Political Correspondent but then I think he changed to Rome Correspondent for a while before returning pack to politics. I think it was there where James Landale took over as Chief Political Correspondent.
Out of interest who's the Sports Editor and Chief Sports Correspondent?

I don't think there is one. The BBC editors (that I can think of) are:
Political - Andrew Marr
World Affairs - John Simpson
Home Affairs - Mark Easton
Economics - Evan Davis
Business - Jeff Randall

An article which I read on mediaguardian said that the BBC were considering appointing a Middle East Editor and Europe Editor.

Surely they could do with a sports editor? Then again if there isnt one, there must be no need.

why do they sometimes use "news correspondent"???.. can't they think of anything more useful to put on the aston?.. always struck me as a bit daft...

Some people are just news correspondents.....like when Tim Willcox or Clarence Mitchell put together reports they are news correspondents. I think its just because there isnt much else you could call them. If there were different correspondent names for everything then it would bring in a "correspondent culture" where every little story has a correspondent with a related name. Just looking at todays news stories, imagine if there was a

Haulage Correspondent
Antarctic Correspondent
Discrimination Correspondent
9/11 Correspondent

People would complain to the BBC saying how can they justify hundreds and hundreds of specific correspondents with all the cuts they introduced.

Long Winded answer to short thought i know.

Well they could do what everybody else does and call them 'reporters'.

Reporters are on a lower pay grade than correspondents.

Cant remember where but I did read a couple of days ago that Mark Mardell could be off to Brussels to take the European Editor's role and that when Andy Marr steps down (likely to be soon), Newsnights Martha Kearney will take over.

Interesting - I always thought that Martha would be a top contender to take over. If this does happen who will become chief political correspondent, and who will take over from Martha on Newsnight - perhaps James Landale??
