Obviously Andrew Marr is at the top but who's the number 2 Political reporter and number 3 etc. Nothing on the BBC site that gives any clues. Does anyone know or can make an informed guess at a seniority list?

As you said Andrew Marr is Political Editor but there is no such post as Deputy Political Editor. The closest thing to a number 2 (so to speak) is probably Mark Mardell but as I've listed below, seniority is dependent on what outlet is being reported on. For example:

Mark Mardell - Chief Political Correspondent, Ten O'Clock News
James Landale - Chief Political Correspondent, BBC News 24
John Pienaar - Chief Political Correspondent, BBC Radio Five Live

If any of the above appear on the other channels, they are simply referred to as a "Political Correspondent".

I do think News 24 really need someone a bit higher profile and with a bit more weight if they're going to look serious about political coverage. Andrew Marr almost never appears on the channel, which I personally think is an absolute disgrace.

When you compare the likes of Adam Boulton to some of the (admittedly very competant) reporters that News 24's political coverage goes through, I don't think there's much contest.

Actually Mark Mardell is BBC One's Chief Political Correspondent - not just the Ten.

Martha Kearny is Newsnight's Political Editor - why isn't she branded as chief political correspondent - as it does seem to imply that Newsnight has nothing to do with BBC News. Saying that Terri Stienastny (sp?) appears on Newsnight, and on other BBC news outlets

Sean Lay seems to be regularly on Breakfast and the One, whilst Jo Coburn seems to be on N24 more. Shame Daisy Sampson left Breakfast - thought she was rather good on it.

What is the role of the Political Editor?

Depends on a number of factors.
Any editors role is to energise their team of correspondents, while ensuring "quality control"
They also cover large stories adding seniority and importance to certain stories.
The role also varies heavily depending upon the medium of an Editor, whether its Radio, Print or TV.
There again you could also take the view that Political Editors simple take the big stories and add an opinion. That and drink coffee....

Im sure some TV insiders would be able to provide a much more insightful analysis of their role....

Right im still looking for Tea leaves....

Since Hutton, with the BBC's charter under review, and with budget cuts looming...I'd say the real number two is Number 10 Razz.

Jon Sopel was looking unimpressed with James Landale earlier on n24. I will try and recreate the exchange between them (it's probably not too accurate, but this is the jist of it):

Sopel - "well today, as you may know, jeremy paxman will be interviewing prime minister tony blair on bbc one at 7.30pm. it will surely make interesting viewing. we will now join our chief political correspondent james landale for an insight into what he said. James, you've seen the interview haven't you?"

Landale - "yes........"

Sopel *exasperated* - "do i have to spoonfeed you all your lines??!!"

You make it sound like there was animosity between them. I saw that too, and it was joking around.

God, some people on this forum are really stupid.

Absolutely no need to add that last line and call me stupid - I was not watching at the time, I heard it in the background. I thought it was animosity between them, obviously I was wrong, and I apologise.

I'm not one to usually sound somewhat nasty but what utter twoodle.... The BBC is famed for its independence and still remains the most impartial broadcaster in the world.
