Since the subject had widened somewhat, Iv'e moved it here to continue the discussion which we had previously started within the BBC News Channel thread...........
Does anyone know who composed this theme and where could one find a full-length orchestral version of the same? Despite it's rather simplistic configuration, I always felt that the long prop at the back which bore the "BBC NEWS" name was rather cutting-edge for the mid-80's!
I believe the full length (or titles length at least) version of that era (often known as the Venetian Blinds look to those in the Beeb) is on Meldrum's Private Parts... it might say on the notes who composed it...
EDIT - just checked - it doesn't!! It's file #17297 if you're interested...
And I believe the titles graphics used during that era were generated electronically live for each transmission (rather than being recorded on video tape and played in) I think they were triggered by the 1/4" audio tape machine that played the accompanying music. Neat solution for the time.
News have always been keen to avoid tape for their titles - using that system, then laser discs, then a hard drive system called Stingray (and a similar system called VERA in the regions), before moving to server playout. (The advantage of Laser disc and Stingray was that they were separate audio sources on the sound desk, and could be left configured for stereo, whereas with a server in some situations the same ports are used for both titles and normal inserts - and normal inserts are often split-track requiring the replay channel to be Left/Right bothed and thus mono-ed)
