Rich Preston is currently anchoring BBC News overnight. He's quite good. Is he regular or has he been deployed to cover the current shortage?

He came over from the radio side over the winter.

He primarily seems to work as the "in studio" reporter for the overnight hours, but occasionally fills in at the desk.

I think he's good - the scottish accent takes a little getting used to - but he has a lot of promise if he can refine his delivery and body language with a little more experience.

First night anchoring was Feb 4/5 - https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Ly8awBR7r/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

For a short time before relaunch day, BBC News 24 had moved into a temporary CSO set-up in studio TC10 whilst BBC World temporarily moved out of N9 and into N6.
ah yes, I remember the CSO loop wasn't quite long enough, and featured the same three people repeatedly walking in and out of shot.

BBC World in TC7 with Al Yates.

James will be along shortly to correct you...

I agree that red/cream era was too short and should have been used until the 2008 relunch. Red/black look was such a letdown, an unnecessary change for the worse which made the channel look dark, depressing and disjointed, especially when they got the new plastic set. The later, 2007 phase, of the red/black look was better but that didn't last long.

Mid 2000s was a bad period for World, IMO. The plastic set, red/black look and inferior music, terrible breakfiller, bulletins with no proper closing. I rarely watched in those days.

Yeah, they unpicked the BBC1 bulletins during this period, too. It really was a mish-mash in 2003. Like you say, the titles and stings were still red and cream, the set didn't seem to go well with the titles as there was no cream and a much brighter red on the walls than the China red of the titles. What's more, the big screens featured a holding graphic of a red and white design with the relevant 1/6/10 logo. They were similar to the daytime summary stings that had been introduced, which were also out of sync with the red and cream main bulletin titles!
That was the only part of the red and black era I actually liked. The music was fab in 2007 and I liked the glossier titles. Once again, though, they had finally finessed the style by 2007 but dumped it in 2008! Whenever they get something good it's always dropped quickly in favour of something inferior that lasts for years. Same goes for ITN - the best designs they had in decades were for News at Ten in 2008, but dropped in 2009.

It always seems to be the way - when the news bulletins/channels find a really good look it doesn't seem to take long until they change it or try and tweak it and it doesn't go well while far worse looks/presentation remains around for far longer.

I thought for example the slightly darker blue and red look Sky News used from 2010 was quite stunning and actually rather classy but then within 2 or so years they'd begun tweaking things (a slightly cheaper looking DOG and the previously lovely TOTH sequence being replaced by elements of the website/app flying onto the screen and what felt like somebody ziplining down an elevator) and the presentation started slipping.

Whereas the comparatively dull 'white' look has had a few cosmetic changes but has by and large kept the same music, bottom thirds, look etc. for coming up to 5 years now.

Given what I've said above, I really hope Sky don't try to change up their presentation hugely their presentation for the next big election as the whole presentation in the 2019 election was spot on.

All these posts are bringing back memories. I concur entirely that BBC World was very strong in that period, and a lot of that was down to consistency. Consistently solid newsreaders, a consistent roster, consistent presentation, and a consistent focus on global news reporting which tapped into the correspondents and bureaux around the globe. You could turn on BBC World at any hour knowing you’d receive a high quality overview of world news. That model suits on-demand, ad-hoc viewing habits. Now, while I’m still a fan, especially compared to the alternatives, the abundance of branded and differentiated programming removes that consistency and certainty. This model is perhaps better suited to extended viewing habits.

...presentation was strong it made the best use of those bridge China red titles, that globe spun so fast for World Sport Very Happy...

Here is the sport ident you mention (apologies for the audio cut at the start):

Does bbc world news still have regular sports and business bulletins each hour?

Not usually because usually on world during the day there was no bbc world news, more the branded shows.

Not each hour, and not integrated into the standard editions of World News as they used to be, but World still has business and sport as various points through the day. Sport in particular is often done as a standalone edition of Sport Today; prior to the current Coronavirus coverage, World used to run World News on the weekend afternoons at :00, followed by a standalone Sport Today at :15, rather than handover to sport for an update and then hand back. This arrangement facilitates the sponsorship of Sports Today in all or parts of the world - whereas a full integration into a World News bulletin wouldn't allow that.

I love this headline bed at the intro. I guess it wasn't used very often?
