Graphic Designer, Specials

Organisation: BBC
Location: Central London
Date posted: 08 Dec 05
Closing date: 28 Dec 05

As part of our shambolic News Interactive design team, you’ll produce a range of sub-standard graphics for breaking news and special events. It could mean working on anything from animations and information graphics, to maps and charts. You’ll also be responsible for explaining design issues to overpaid and underworked people in suits who won't have the slightest clue what you're on about.

Job description

You’ll need to combine a degree (which can be aquired by anyone, just about anywhere) in graphic or information design (or relevant experience in posting mocks on the Internet) with a very basic knowledge of news and current affairs.

Experience of visual story telling and information visualisation is essential, and you’ll be working alongside biased editorial, technical and interaction (the people who brought you the red button!) teams. You should also have the ability to mince into work with an oh-so-trendy iPod and record bag slung over your shoulder. You will have the ability to communicate transient and unworkable ideas to people of all levels of mental retardedness.

Applications to be received by 28 December.

Ref. 79674

Definately not bitter about the ol' BBC job then?

I totally agree Jay. The BBC News VR set of the early 90s was innovative at the time, but it just wouldn't work now unless they wanted the nation's premier news broadcaster to look like a local cable channel in Australia. Embarassed Embarassed

Please... We don't even have local cable channels down under - we just have universally poor news presentation full stop.

I've got a couple of points and questions:

1) There is nothing wrong with the current set for the BBC NEWS! It's more modern than the cream studio.

2) I hope they don't take the direction of Sky News or ITV NEWS, the walking around is too American style. The BBC have got it just right, like on the 6 o'clock news, George walks to the big screen to show the "Special Report". That's all the walking round I need!

Couple of questions:

1) When are they planning on changing the set?
2) Does it include changing the News 24 set?
3) What's the point? They only changed the backdrop of the National News on BBC ONE in May, and the Broadcasting House will be ready in 2008! I don't see the point in changing now!

I'm unsure, because it is a famous set, but it is maybe a bit tiring, so time to move on.
