"Jago Design creates sharing sets for BBC News" Design week, November 10th 2005

The article reports that Jago design has been commisssioned to create a sharing set for Newsnight, Working Lunch and Newsround. They have created sets in the past for: ITV National News (2003) ,BBC News 24 (2003), Channel Four (2005), and ITV Regional News (To be completed in 2006).. "The sets, located in the same studio space, will each be designed to share certain key elements and the redesign forms part of the organisations value for money initative" Michael Kavanagh, Head of presentation for BBC Television News. The studio sets are expected to be completed by May next year.

And in a further article "Makeover culture makes news" Which is about Sky's new newsroom. On the subject of the currents sets for the main BBC News and N24: Kavanagh says"The organisation will most likely overhaul the sets ahead of its move in 2010".

Interesting. It'll be interesting to see if the same entire set is used for all three shows, or if there is an element of three linked, fixed, sets occupying the studio, with each programme using common elements, but also having bits they use more than the other shows? Working Lunch requires a stand-up screen, Newsnight doesn't usually. Newsround currently employs stood up presentation, Newsnight doesn't etc.

If the sets have to be flexible but without requiring lots of scene-shifting, then it will be interesting to see if projection, clever lighting, gauze effects (like BBC Sport use) etc. will be employed.

As for the BBC One Six Ten and News 24 sets, I don't think anyone thought they'd stay the same for 7 years...

I like the current graphics, but would maybe animate the astons and speed up the globe on the opening titles, and reinstate the 1999-2004 music .

Absolutely! I personally would like to see a more dramatic opening for BBC News, perhaps in an ABC News style? I think they definately need to move towards a design that incorporates more of the colour spectrum (with some glossy animated astons and dogs similar to those of NBC Today?) All in all, more American!

I would guess that any changes would take place next year when Anna Ford goes - a chance for a presenter refresh, new studio, new graphics, new titles and ditching the edit of the 99 music - oh and a proper headline bed a la 99, that isnt restarted every few seconds like now would be nice!

We can hope

Well Newsround is sharing the new studio they could pull the current NR one down and build the new one. ? They could use another small studio for the NR Studio from whenever they start till next may

Breakfast, Working Luch, Newsround and Newsnight all share that studio so of course it's going to be big.

If the spare space in studio 6 is limited then I suppose it is possible that the National News could move into studio 7. This would give a reasonable size studio which could be setup to have the main news area as well an adaptable studio area for programes such as breakfast, working lunch, newsround and newsnight. I just struggle to imagine how everything would fit into studio 6 as in its current form it seems too small, though prehaps it is the bigged raised wooden circle platform that makes if feel smaller.

Also another issue is Newsnight. Would the closing summary for the 10 o'clock news be dropped, as often Newsnight has already started when this is occuring.

How many people would need to appear in the studio simultaneously given the selection of programmes being discussed? At most about 6 people I would say, (correct me if I am wrong).

Bearing in mind most of them would be in frame at any one time, we're not talking about requiring the Blue Peter studio, are we?

Perhaps we'll see some keyed backgrounds, or indeed a full virtual set. If it's well designed, there's no reason for it to *look* small.

Not sure what you are trying to say. Newsnight and the Ten O'Clock News couldn't share the same studio and gallery, as both are well into studio rehearsals and recordings by 2100, often earlier in the case of both shows.

More American style news output? Confused I can't imagine it. The current presentation could be better, but it could be worse as well. Having an Americanised BBC News would be a step in the wrong direction in my opinion...

Once i will gather confidence and i will upload some material about Hungarian news programmes, just to prove that you can be satisfied with what you get now from the BBC. Smile I'd be glad if any channel here had nearly the same quality in presentation as any regional news has in Britain.

By the way, does anyone have any behind the scenes photo of the current National News set. So far I've only seen 3, but I am really interested in it. Wink
