Does BBC News need a new set?

There has been a multitude of complaints and comments left on this site about the *fake* newsroom background, the lit desk, the laptops and the abundance of red and the plasma screens. So is it time that the BBC hired the Nick Knowles team to come in and give the studio a bit of DIY? Or is it time that these complaints be silenced? You be the judge.

This poll applies to BBC's National and Weekend news AND Breakfast too.

Leave comments, as they'll help distinguish which studio you like or not and what they need doing to them.

I don't mind but don't invite Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS team in. They are the worst at cutting corners on TV.

All that really needs to be done to the existing one, in my opinion, is to introduce a better news centre background. I think it would be nice if they could render a live action sequence of the new Broadcasting House news centre from this picture:

oh they've just built a new one you arse. Honestly people whinge on about the BBC wasting money and demand they build new sets every five seconds. Get over it.

I'm aware of that, but if the BBC built good enough looking sets in the first place, this new set 'demanding' you speak of wouldn't be necessary. Honestly.

Still the BBC News sets are better than the Sky News set (in my opinion).

I'd like some changes to be made to the National studio - the 1999 version was much, much better. It was fairly simple, and looked real - something which can't be attributed to the current set. The fake newsroom is awful. A major improvement would be to show the old backdrop from 1999-2003, which showed the floor of the News Centre. At least it added some reality to it.

As for Breakfast, I think it's too simple - there's practically no substance. What's it made of? Two desks and a sofa. There aren't even any screens! Also, it's far too white for an early morning programme. I think it was at its best in 2000-2002, when they had lots of orange and yellow, which made it feel very warm. They also had a desk for the first two hours, with the sofa for the last hour. That's what's wrong with it now - I can't take news on a sofa seriously for some reason. A desk for the first couple of hours (when it's supposed to be more serious) would be nice.

I've never understood the numerous set changes over the last few years - and therefore it be difficult for them to justify another new one.

However, it does look awful - especially the screens. Some serious tweaking I think - and changing a fake background can't be difficult?

They should have a different set for each programe or a different set-up such as, for the 1: Sitting on the desk and a big use of the background plasma screens. For the 6: A sofa with occasional stading up ,like now, but more. For the 10: Sitting down with quite a good use of the background screens. They should also have different colour scheme for each programe.

Yes - a desk is needed. Surely they could do a sort of mini-nationalesq set, and a similarly designed area for a sofa, and pres screen?

I would have the news done by the main presenters at the desk at the top of each hour. Then they could go between the sofa and desk and screen after that. And put the weekend-style paper review on weekdays.

I wouldn't be fussed on that set-up. That would be harking back to the days of the virtual studio, and that was cold and boring. Just keeping it as it is now would suffice, but tweak just a couple of things, namely the background. That would make a lot of difference.
