Oh.
Well, what a disappointment.
Makes me wonder what the point of the N6-esque bit was at all?

No new set at Southampton.

obviously only saw the CSO bit of Monday's South Today, all was as before tonight with their original (albeit altered) Lambie-Nairn cream set.

I cant see what is wrong with the current ST set as they have keep trying to refresh it every few years.

Yes, and in my opinion it isn't bad, but there are still lots of things I don't like and I think it'd be nice to have a big revamp.
It's not a bad set no, and Southampton have at least refreshed the way they use it every so often. They dispensed with the original desk, stood up and walked about (before network started doing that caper actually), and have now sat Sally back down again behind their peculiarly shaped desk. But the set itself is undeniably pretty old fashioned in the grand scheme of things. AFAIK only Southampton, Newcastle and Cambridge still use their Cream Lambie-Nairn sets. Cambridge still even have their dark wood oval desk.
It's probably, in part at least, due to the fact that Newcastle and Southampton are the two largest studios in English Regions, so it's a major chunk of money to commission, design and build new sets, particularly if you consider that the current vogue is for lots of expensive projection screens rather than flats with 'insets' (i.e. plasmas or single projector screens). The most recent big studio relaunch (Manchester) has still seen the use of flats for the most part with individual screens, rather than a whole wall of video screens.

But surely fitting a videowall as it were is a one time only expense. No matter what the nationals do after all that would ever need changing is the desk and video feed.
As much as I love my region the set is a horrible mish-mash. I've never understood why they removed the small screens with images from across the region to replace them with blue light box things. Nor where they got the idea for that desk.
I do love the sofa area though.

Not the full two minutes - but Look North Leeds have used about 45 seconds of it on the late bulletin a couple of times - running under pictures of pigs (!) and also some lovely weather pictures (!).
Who said local news is predictable?

out of interest, has any region used the full 2 min close that was posted on Lowe's site?

It seems strange that they would actually use that 2 minute piece with the end sting burnt onto the end - it would require very tight timing to make sure they started it at the right point so the sting played after the presenter had signed off.

Lots of programmes have back-timed end titles which require the presenter to hit a specific sign off point. It's no different to being counted down to any other point to the presenter, and enables you to have a few seconds lee-way when you go to the end titles, which have to hit the end of the programme (ideally without ending up on a still frame).
