Keeping this on topic of BBC News...

This has to be one of the best bits of news music I've heard. It's clever in that its clearly BBC News but different enough to make the programme unique.

Yes! That was one of the best he ever did for a BBC News programme. Simply amazing. Sadly, the BBC killed it once again when they reworked it in 2004. See a pattern here... Laughing The BBC should learn to leave well enough alone. All of their themes between 1999 and 2003 were superb and could have been used for much longer than they were.

That original BBC Four News music is just absolutely brilliant - I think I had forgotten how great it was. If anyone has the full package I wouldn't mind taking a listen.

Totally agree, and the best thing is they could easily bring a lot of these brilliant themes back and reuse them today without them feeling out of place.

I think Newsday is short of its own theme tune how about using it for that?

Good point, why is it that broadcasters never ever bring back an old news theme? I know ITN brought back News at Ten's theme in 2008, but that was a reworked version. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think any broadcaster has been bold enough to bring back an old version of a theme. Yet, it's been done in the USA - the CBS Evening News has recently reverted to using its theme from 1987! And not a reworked version, but the actual original!! I think British broadcasters seem to perceive it as a defeat, but I'd disagree. If something was superb, then why not let people enjoy it again? And some of these BBC News themes were either so short-lived or tucked away on a marginal channel that most people would think they're new anyway!

Yes, the reasoning for it was A) CBS wanted to hark back to their heritage, it was the first music used in a CBS News programme since its inception and it made sense as it was 'purer' than the 1991 music and more fitting than James Horner's music, B) It was slightly cheaper and C) It was never officially dropped as the sonic brand for CBS News, with the leitmotif featuring prominently in stings and advertisements, it was the perfect candidate.

A few new mixes have been added since mind, such as a remixed headline bed and a new Special Report theme (and new SR graphics which are red, just somebody forgot to change the bevel/glass settings in the project and it has a blue bevel on the CBS Eyemark!)

The 'and now some puppies will lick your face' music?

No, that's the 1991 music - deemed to gimmicky by the then Creative Director, Bob Peterson...

I seem to remember that MDTA made a mock combining the 1993 orchestral music with the 1999 music, I really enjoyed that since I find the orchestral music more authoritative, yet David Lowe's music more modern. Anyone still got a copy that of that music?

Not sure whether this is the best place to put them but I have had a go at making the BBC World News Program Beds from videos. They aren't the best quality but here they are.

I've always adored the 2002 BBC World music. The version of the titles from then (originally used for The World Today but then adopted all over the channel) was brilliant too.

Oh and Ison, BBC 4 News you say?
