Obviously we are all agreed that ITV News is better than BBC News, but there's no point in just saying that.

Why is ITV News better than BBC News, and what can the BBC do to match with ITV?

Firstly, presenters. Trevor McDonald is the nation's favourite newscaster, after a poll a few years ago he has kept the title, even though he's probably dropped out of the top 10 by now. That's not the point, he is a good presenter, with a lot of authority and experience, and a "big name". His main rival is welsh, and deadly boring.

Secondly, ITV News pretty much invented news as we see it today. It introduced the concept of a news programme, instead of 5 minute bulletin. It introduced the concept of reporters, live reports etc, and this serves as an advantage that the BBC can never compete with.

Thirdly, the set. The BBC news studio is pathetic. It looks ghastly, with a horrendous floor and a generally boring desk etc etc. Horrible on screen. ITV News's studio is state of the art, impossible to compete with. It allows so much more than the BBC's studio, and looks a world better.

So what can the BBC do to match ITV's superiority? Or would they be fighting an impossible battle?

That really annoy's me; Will You Please Stop It.

Edit: Joesph while I would agree your entitled to your own opinion I would take you to task on a number of the "facts" you preport.

I'd change it slightly, why do you think ITV News is better? What's it about the way it operates that clearly impresses you?

I do like ITV News and the ITV News Channel, but totally accept it for the tabloid nature it has.

I know it has nothing to do with the substance of the news, but its presentation, music, graphics and news agenda are unique (esp at 6.30 when I see it).

I always disliked the ITN music and graphics, but love the current ITV graphics, music and presentation. The news agenda we can discuss at a different time.

Yes. Completely in agreement.

Although I might suggest that you might take a gander at a few of the threads on this forum before coming to such a conclusion.

Sarcastic reply?

Lose half the audience that watch the Ten to match the low ratings of the ITV 2230?

Whatever you might think of the news agenda, presentationally speaking as standalone bulletins, the ITV News is much more interesting and visually appealing.

BBC tend to use a single static camera shot in a cramped space, with a dull fake newsroom backdrop without any visual indication of the story other than a small description strap. I much preferred in the old studio where they used to key a graphic on the fake pillar behind the newsreader.

Besides the 10:30, the Six O'Clock and Evening News are often neck and neck.

One area that the News on BBC 1 is woefully poorer than the ITV is with the presenters. Apart from Huw Edwards and Fiona Bruce the rest are bloody awful.
They've tried dropping in people from ITV , SKY and it hasn't worked .

In comparison the ITV lot are more than adequate and far less annoying, give or take a couple of the ladies.

So come on BBC, ring the changes and get some new people instead.

Yep - though last time I looked the One O'Clock was well ahead of the Lunchtime. The only real competition is currently between the 1800-1900 newshours.

As for the previous set - the pillar was real, not fake, though all but the shiny metal edge was replaced by a graphic usually.

Imagine for one week, that BBC One and ITV1 got rid of all the news bullitens, and only had one, 30minute news broadcast like America does - and they went ahead at the same time (6.30pm). Also Channel 4 News and Five News went out went out at the same time. Who do you think would get the most?
I personally think ITV Evening News, but depending whats on.
I think this would open another question, would Brits turn to Sky News, News 24, News Channel to get more info, analysis on days news? Would they view the ATV programmes ? Rolling Eyes
