BBC News: lower thirds...

Could they be used better on local BBC? (October 2014)

The new style BBC News lower thirds have been being used for some time now.

But it is a shame that this has made (in my opinion) some of the local BBC's News look much more old-fashioned.

How easy would it be for the proper lower thirds to be installed to all local BBC news. In stead of just having a straight appear on the screen (which looks very amateurish).

I think it would be good just to have all the local BBC News using the same style animation to bring up the lower thirds.

And, in the South, I have noticed how bad It looks when they do sport and do not have the right sport style graphics.

Or, is it time for a new style lower thirds- to be rolled out on all of the BBC channels- including local.

It's a good job that template is free, because it's not very accurate.

And the reason why the regions don't all have the national graphics is because many of the regions don't have the same graphics equipment, often not capable of the same animations that are used. It would require significant investment at a time that the BBC are desperate to cut costs to roll out identical graphics to all of their outlets.

The only way to get them all to look the same would be to simplify them even further.

But it would only need putting some new graphics machines in older studios- such as the South and Yorkshire.

such as the South and Yorkshire.

Did you pick Yorkshire because my region is shown as Yorkshire on here? Leeds already have access to vizrt.

You know the Leeds studio is only 10 years old?

The BBC would need to install VizRT boxes in every English region - only a few of them have them currently - to replicate the Network looks. These are not at all cheap. I don't think that the BBC can justify the cost at the moment. However as each regional centre is upgraded to HD, I would expect a VizRT (or equivalent) system to be installed.

How come the nations have them? Newsline even have it aligned over a DOG

A simple case of there being more money in the nations than in the regions really!

Similarly NWT has them because of Salford, London has them because of NBH etc.

I do recall Oxford Road getting one before the NWT 2007 refresh. The astons started to animate as they were on screen. I suppose that was before the recession hit. Was that then transferred to Salford?

A lot of the Manchester equipment was auctioned off and redistributed throughout the BBC, a lot of the NWT Gallery from Oxford Road wound up at BBC Oxford...
