I hope we're not having a "network affiliation" switch, with ABC and NBC following, we know how confusing they can be with some of the video posted on here. Wink

It states in the article that this replaces the current arrangement with ABC News - had that relationship developed issues? Or was it just time for a change?

Will CBS's separate deal with Sky News remain (which would leave CBS supplying 2 UK news channels)?

Seemingly the Sky / CBS deal has ended

The BBC and CBS are joining forces on news and will share resources on both sides of the Atlantic in a deal that sees the British public broadcaster end its previous news deal with ABC while CBS ends its agreement with Sky.

Sky had a deal with CBS that went back to 1989 when Sky News launched. CBS News is still part of ENEX, as is Sky News, so there is still a connection with Sky, but this BBC deal seems to be a new 'network affiliation' deal.

This a great dead for both parties I think. The tone of ABC news has gone down a populist, I dare say, tabloid-esque route. Whilst CBS News, IMO, has firmly planted the Tiffany-network crown back on its head especially the news division. The evening news program and its morning show is far more serious in tone. And certainly its output from 60 minutes and CBSN is more serious.. The most definitely leaves ABC in the cold. NBC has the deal with ITN/ITV and its new euronews acquisition. ABC is probably scrambling for another news partner.

Some of the BBC's coverage of the US Presidential election involved the BBC and CBS - at a technical level - working together, with CBS helping organise some lines / facilities in New York. That went well and seems to have helped this agreement come together. The CBS egnieers I dealt with were very good and helpful. (For the record I've not had similar dealings with ABC so can't compare.)

It may now be the case that some / all CBS material on ENEX is marked as 'not Sky' given the new BBC deal.

Although this CBS deal is a replacement for ABC it seems - from both sides - to being announced as a closer partnership. Given BBC News taking on the Reuters contract from ITN its some positive news for the BBC.

Given the nature of the European News Exchange (ENEX), I'm not sure that's possible.

Members pay a yearly membership fee. Members submit material to the content pool, but they are not allowed to charge for it. But they can use all material in the content pool, free of charge.

CBS are already an associate member of the EBU, so they might have to pull out of ENEX, but given all that access to free material, they might not want to pull out.

They don't need to leave. They can just negotiate a free trade deal and pay a fee Smile

More seriously.. interesting for Sky. Anything that sees Sky relying more on Fox is a bad thing - though I think they're pretty well integrated in the NY, LA and DC bureaux, and the local coverage is no better or worse than CBS

ABC must be feeling a bit stuffed, but they do so little reporting from overseas now that I'm surprised they even used the BBC very much.

Out of interest.. any particular reason why the BBC collaborated with CBS for the election? Seems odd, given a longstanding contract was already in place with ABC?

CBS pulling out of ENEX would be a big deal. They're the biggest contributor, and there's no other US broadcasters in there.

This is probably a better alignment. Of the big three networks, CBS is by far the most meat and potatoes news operation. ABC had a good news operation for a time, but in the last decade, it's been completely transformed into superficial politics, pointless health, human interest, and shameless ploys to appeal to whatever is "trending" online. Their affiliate services also leave a lot desired. The original BBC/ABC deal was brokered in 1994, which was back when ABC was arguably the more "worldly" US operation with Peter Jennings at the helm. Now, CBS is a much better match for the BBC. A loss for Sky News, but I'm sure they'll manage.

Some interesting selections from this WSJ article about the partnership, and how it came to be:

Quote:
The arrangement between the units of CBS Corp. and British Broadcasting Corp. will help both expand their global footprints and increase coverage of world events. CBS News and BBC News will have access to each other’s global and domestic news across all platforms, including television, radio and digital, as well as access to each other’s correspondents as needed.
...
The news organizations will begin coordinating their resources and coverage plans immediately, Mr. Rhodes wrote.

According to a memo sent to BBC News staff, the deal came together after CBS and the British broadcaster worked together in the run-up to the U.S. presidential election. “It became clear they could offer unrivalled logistical support to our teams in the field,” according to the memo.

The companies are also discussing sharing international facilities in the years ahead.
