The in vision signing service has started as usual on the new channel

I doubt the signers are part of the NUJ!
NUJ or not, they're employed by Red Bee Media, and therefore not part of this dispute.

Emma Crosby is now both on News at 1 and at World News... both channels have no graphics though! Laughing

EDIT: I just saw news channel, they have the lower-thirds... Laughing

If they wanted to, could the signers not work in sympathy with the strike, or would it be illegal as they don't work for the BBC?

That's a strangely bright-looking background behind Emma. Is that what your One o'Clock News set normally looks like? It's different from the one used earlier in the day.

I think they've been lucky so far today to have had such good presenters in - Simon McCoy, Emma Crosby, Peter Dobbie, Mike Bushill and Adnan Nawaz.

Watching her, though, I'm reminded how I'd much I think Emma Crosby deserves to be on one of the main networks as a proper newsreader - shame the rumours of her replacing Katie Derham at ITV came to nothing.

Wouldn't that be an unauthorised absence ? Only union members have the right to strike.

Agreed. She is a very good newscaster, in the proper sense.

Clean screens here on World.

Interesting to note Laura Travellion doing a live from Port-au-Prince on what looks like a pretty good videophone. I'm wondering if she's reporting because she felt the story deserved the screentime, or isn't an NUJ member? Similarly Reeta Chakrabarti was on a report earlier about the UKIP leadership election - while it's quite possible it was recorded prior to today, I wonder if any of the political team feel strongly about having political correspondents & producers on staff to ensure fair reporting and neutrality - they certainly brought it up when the conservative conference could have been sacrificed.

No, that would be secondary action, and they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Only BBC employees who are a member of the NUJ who do not report for duty (or for part of their duty) today, have legal protection against breach of contract, because it's a legal strike. Anyone else may be at risk of losing their job.
