there was a period where jon did the six an awful lot, around the time when we often got two women together...i quite like hime on it. the middle ground really, not quite george and not quite dermot...if that makes sense!

On the One this lunchtime Nicholas Witchell was in Baghdad as a 'World Affairs Correspondent', has he left the royal job - where he never looked too comfortable - or is he just over there to cover for the yearly summer staff shortage? sorry if i've missed an earlier post about this!

Mostly likely because the queen is on here summer break for the next 2/3 months. Looking at the royal diary, http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page3950.asp, after today HM has got no engagements till October, at the earliest.

Summer is normally not a time when big royal events happen, apart from 1997, the only big story going on is Will/Kate will they wont they news.

Or just introduce VizRT! It's on Wales Today isn't it - why does some minority interest programme take precedence over the main BBC News!?

So that the "minority interest programme" as you put it can find the bugs and issues that need ironing out before it's ready for the main BBC news

Surely News 24 would have found them by now!

My goodness, Jon Sopel on the Six with Sian! Has he ever done a main BBC1 bulletin before?

He has done the 6 with Kerplinsky a few times now. First time with Sian tonight i think.

And I think I've seen Nicholas Witchell in Baghdad before ......

IIRC, Jon Sopel was a fairly (irregular) stand-in on the Six during the virtual era, where there was a real mixture of presenters who used to fill-in. (This was around the same time as Jill Dando, Anna Ford, Jennie Bond, Mike Smartt, Justin Webb, BIG MOIRA,)

I always felt Jon Sopel was just too plain for the BBC to be a main presenter on network bulletins, a middle aged Englishman of average height and appearance couldn't possibly be used regularly! Wouldn't bet against him replacing Paxo on Newsnight if he ever gracefully retires tho.

haha...a specially extended one o'clock news, that was longer by two miniutes...not exactly extended really! and interesting to see kate and louise on presenting duties, whilst sending george a up to do the essential 'i'm in a helicopter' report...

No national update this afternoon - straight to the regions instead - no reason given, just "unable to at the moment".

Has there been a fire alarm / power cut at TVC? Jon Sopel's presenting News 24 from somewhere unusual (BBC London?) and before that we were with Chris Eakin in Gloucester for about 20mins non-stop.

(Yes, I know... it took three minutes for 'Submit Post' to work.)
