UK Today was always a good feature on the ITV News Channel in the 3pm hour, with live links to 2 or 3 regions talking about their top stories

Not forgetting News 24's UK Today back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. What everyone is suggesting here for News 24 happened back then and was eventually scrapped. Am I the only one who remembers this?

No you're not but and it's already been mentioned somewhere and I'm sure Nicky remembers it.

I don't believe UK Today on N24 ever included actual opts out to the regions. In fact, as I recall, and as StuartPlymouth mentioned a couple of pages back, UK Today was the sustaining feed for regional programming on digital versions of BBC One and BBC Two, back in the day when there were no/limited regional opt outs for the Nations and Regions.

Rather than show Newsroom South East/ BBC LDN as the digital network feed for those regions unable to opt out to show their own regional news programme, the BBC created UK Today. During simulcasts of Breakfast, UK Today would also be shown during opt-out points on News 24.

Part of the N24 set was actually used for UK Today bulletins. In fact, here's a familiar face (in a very blurry capture!) presenting UK Today many a year ago:

and for those too young/foolish to remember it, here's a still from the programmes titles:

and if you're really thirsting for some nostalgia, clicky clicky for the full title sequence in all its Lambie-Nairn glory.

UK Today started way back in the Flag's era of News 24. It was originally on from 18:00-19:00 only on News 24. When Sky Digi launched it was then carried on BBC One England on Sky (as there was initially no regional England on Sky) and acted as the Network sustaining feed for any region which failed to opt etc. Occasionally UK Today couldn't broadcast for various reasons so we got a very long trailer telling us about what UK Today was (think it was Martine Croxall who did the trailer). However UK Today actually started to get in the way of News 24 as on several occasions on BBC One England on Sky we just ended up getting News 24 rolling news if some major story had broke. After a while UK Today moved into N6 (National News Studio) using a CSO opposite the main news set and was presented as a seperate entity for BBC One England on Sky only (but was still the network fall back). Finally when all regions launched on Sky it was no longer required and vanished into the history books. BBC London is now the network fall back.

if any of this is slightly incorrect i apolgise but it has been a few years now. Im sure Noggin will fill in any blanks.

Huw Edwards has popped up in the Algrave on N24 just now.

Is he there to present bulletins tonight, or just for the interview he has conducted with Robert Murat?

Thanks, David. I knew I wasn't dreaming. UK Today definitely launched on News 24 earlier than it appeared on BBC 1 as the sustaining feed.

Surely one of the BBC's other journalists out there could have interviewed this bloke!

Im finding it a bit frustrating at the number of BBC Journo's is in Portugal.

Jane Hill is there, as is Huw Edwards, also some other reporters including someone for newsround! Is there any need to have so many there?

Surely Jane Hill plus one other is enough?
