Natasha is doing a long shift today! The 12:30PM news, the 5:30PM news and now presenting the 10PM news. Bank holidays should be just banks shut. Big stores have to stay open, so should BBC.

That is perfectly normal for a public holiday - the bulletins are shorter and are usually covered by a single presenter.

I love the way people make this comment every single Bank Holiday as if it is something new!

Well there should be trading laws to prevent shops and businesses opening as it isn't bank holiday as we used to know it.

Within the space of two posts you've argued that both everything should be open and everything should be shut. Care to make your mind up? (Not that it's even remotely on topic, of course)

Yes - I know, well, if I am to agree with stores being greedy then I stick by the second post. Let's keep on topic - This is the first time I've seen all 3 bulletins on a bank holiday.

Funnily enough - this is the first time I have avoided all of them!

What's that? Someone in television doing a 12 hour shift? Never!

The only exception to the bank holiday rule was 2 years ago in the run up to the general election when all of the bulletins were in there normal slots and there normal durations, except the 6 which was on from 5.15. These bulletins had all of there normal presenters with Anna presenting the 1, Sophie and George the 5.15 and Huw the 10. It must have been the first bank holiday that viewers in Scotland and Northern Ireland did not feel hard done by.

Interesting story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2007/05_may/06/pilot.shtml

The BBC is to pilot a short news summary weekdays at 8pm on BBC One.

The pilot will run for five weeks in the Birmingham area starting from Wednesday 9 May 2007.

Three versions will be tested – a 60-second summary with national news, a longer 90-second version with national and regional news and weather, and a 60-second regional only version.

The network element will be presented by BBC news presenter Natasha Kaplinsky and the regional by BBC Midlands Today presenter Suzanne Virdee.

The service will be evaluated at the end of the trial period.

The aim is for the summary to be an extension to the news portfolio adding value to and widening the BBC's services and the number of people reached by them.

It will maintain all the BBC's high editorial and journalistic standards and provide an extra opportunity for viewers to catch up on the news at a time convenient for them.

Nice idea - something that BBC Northern Ireland and UTV have been doing for years with, albeit shorter, bulletins throughout the evening between programmes. (in the form of voiceover over pictures). BBCNI fit their short bulletins in by replacing a promo.

But if they are going to trial a longer, 60-90 second bulletin in the Midlands area, isn't the rest of the country going to be subjected to a hell of a lot of promos at the 8pm junction??!!

I presume that if this trial is successful, it'll just be an evening version of the morning summaries on BBC1, wth maybe a quick regional summary thrown in for good measure.

A regional summary is a good idea. I wouldn't bother with the national headlines as you can get these on so many channels, but an extra regional roundup for people who aren't at home for the 6.30 programme is a great idea and really adds value.

Depends on whether you have a interest in news or not - some people may not have seen any news by the time they get home and say are watching EastEnders ... they may be people who have no real interest in watching 30 mins of news but just want to know what is going on very quickly.

Oh good more Kerplunk-ski.......

Good move though for the BBC, have always liked the 60-Seconds bulletins on BBC Three, think it will be interesting to see how it pans out
