I just saw Gavin Esler on News 24.. wouldnt he be great to do some main BBC One news eh?

No, he'd be busy doing Newsnight , unless he did the One or the Six . If he did the Ten he'd have to present the bulletin, record the opt-in and then run to TC7 in time for Newsnight to start.

Or, he could just present the Ten on a night when he was not presenting Newsnight. Wink

Any reason why we got a Network announcement tonight?

Possibly because of the fact Emily Maitlis was presenting and some regions might not have the relevant pre-recorded anno?

North West did have one, although it sounded rather rushed and differently worded to usual.

Are the announcements pre-recorded? In the South it doesn't sound pre-recorded. As far as I'm aware the regions' announcements are live, at least BBC South's.

I can't speak for any other regions, but BBC North West have had pre-recorded announcements for years. It used to be Alan Dedicoat for our region who pre-recorded the announcements for the main One, Six and Nine/Ten presenters along with Gordon Burns. If an unusual presenter was on, it would be someone else's voice, as clearly Alan Dedicoat is not based at BBC Manchester. I should imagine all the English regions have pre-recorded announcements. I can't see the BBC spending money on employing permanent announcers for the regions given the cost-cutting they're doing.

Indeed, I thought Emily was working for Newsnight but has appeared on the Ten recently. Gavin could do the same if BBC News bosses favoured him too?

In theory any BBC News presenter/reader/reporter could end up anywhere within BBC News.

Yep. As I've said dozens of times before, people seem to think there is a rigid hierarchy of presenters for each programme. In reality, they have a couple of regular presenters for each programme and if those are unavailable, various other people pop up, depending upon who is available at the time. People also seem to forget that some presenters are freelance while some are on contract. If they are on contract, they often can't present more than so many days/hours per week.

It was good to see Frank Gardner standing, albeit with his wheelchair behind him and a frame in front, discussing the Iranian situation this evening.

Absolutely - Jeremy Paxman will be presenting next years Oscars coverage on Breakfast. But he'll spill coffee on his suit and everyone will have a right laugh. Smile

BBC South's are usually pre-recorded, unless as was said, they don't have a relevant announcement in which case they take it from network.

Oh dear, Emily Maitliss presenting the One O Clock news. Why??? Jane Hill is totally in a different league. Maitliss can't seem to project her voice, everything is a whisssper.
