There he is in Iraq - doesn't he look cool in his jeans! Though he does look a bit like a holidaymaker on the right!!!

and people complain about Mark Austin jetting off all the time

Well, to be fair, at least the BBC only deploy Huw Edwards when there is something important. With the frequency that ITV deploy their presenters on location, I wouldn't be surprised that Mark Austin would be outside Buckingham Palace if the Queen sneezed!

On the other hand ITV usually only deploy Mark Austin - when the BBC do send out presenters (which is increasingly common) they now seem to send Huw, George and someone from News 24.

Yes - but bear in mind the ITV presenter only serves the ITV News on ITV1. The BBC people work for Breakfast, all the BBC One bulletins and News 24 (as well as people for BBC World and the various radio stations).

Ok , so the Six was sort of dual anchored with Ben in Bagdad, but did no one else think, the whole flow was much better with just Natasha? Time to return to a single anchored Six?

Yeah, totally argee, no need to have a two presenters and the flow of the whole show feel more better.

Not even if the newsreaders were Nicholas Witchell and Sue Lawley? It depends on the presenters. Natasha IMO carried it a lot better than Ben.

Sorry, I'm too young to remember Nicholas Witchell and Sue Lawley.

Mark Austin with his years as a foreign correspondent is well suited to being on location and ITV do it well. Can't say the same for Huw Edwards - always seems like a token gesture whenever he's out of the studio

...or Geraint at weekends. The most amusing OB was from the Bernard Matthews farm with Geraint during the late Sunday bulletin. Even before the thick fog descended, it was pointless as it was dark and you couldn't see anything. I thought it was very ironic when the fog came down as you could see even less!

I think one presenter would work better than the current layout, but I think they could just change the layout and it be better. For instance, I think that having both presenters read the top story is a waste of time, and the whole standing up thing gets on my nerves, but what if they copied a mixture of News 24, C4 and ITV? Have the main presenter, say George, start from the desk during the headlines, reading out either the first or most important, then we switch to the other presenter, say Jane, read the other headlines from next to the one of the screens like on News 24. Then at the start we could have the top camera spin (like on News 24) to see both presenters in their positions. Then either presenter would read the first story, either from desk or standing by screen, like on News 24 and similar to ITV in that only 1 person reads the first story. They could then do it similarly to how the BBC used to and how C4 do it now with one presenter (anchor) reading the important news and the other reading the headlines and smaller/ lighter news. What does anyone think?

What you are trying to say was done during George and Sophie era, when George would read the headlines on his own then Sophie who would be standing up would let the viewers know what coming up .

Fair point - but still for BBC1 they have two senior presenters generally anchoring live. It always seems a waste sending George out when Huw is there and has been doing the stuff on News 24 an hour earlier. The only time sending both out to anchor seperately should be done is for a real major story that actually warrants the anchoring on location.

Do Newsnight ever send anchors out on location in the way the more traditional news bulletins do? I know they occassionally have special editions, usually involving interviewing Tony Blair in Newcastle - but from what I recall for major events they've always remained studio bound - which is what is probably most suitable for the programme.

P.S. Worst example of anchoring on location I've seen was a few weeks ago on Sky News (possibly the bird flu thing) - where they had two studio guests and the host interviewing them from wherever they'd been dumped to host from.

I must say, Sue Lawley was at her best there, like she always was.

Does anyone know if Sian Williams is going to become a regular face of the six again or if she's now just sticking to Breakfast. Also I watched that Sue Lawley clip again and saw Nicolas Witchell putting the phone down at the start - I know that was their technology then but can you imagine them doing that now?

And also I see the six has gone back to the dep anchor saying hello and welcome and Natasha started the 'after the headlines' story the otherday, giving her more roles (not that who says what first really matters but still!)

Jane Hill stood in for Natasha on Friday so looks like that answer is no, also Bill no longer stands in for George anymore which he did before.

what's with the "iraq4yearson" branding used on Huw's reports, a bit tacky in my opinion

A 'Branding Alert' as they say on Making the News
