Yep. I've never read a live piece to camera on a national news programme but I have given my fair share of presentations and I know the feeling. Once you flub one line or make an error, it's easy to lose your footing and let the whole lot slip. Similarly, if I'm driving and have a near-miss or have to brake hard because some joker has pulled out in front of me without looking (as happened today!), my driving goes to pot for a minute or two as I get pre-occupied with what has just happened. It mustn't be pleasant when you know you've got millions of people watching you.

I felt for Mark tonight, it really was a bit of a tongue twister. Not helped by someone wissing by in a car tooting the horn to distract him further.

He's been reporting from there since the 1 today, not sure if he did the 6 but no doubt been on N24 throughout the day then the 10. He's probably bloody knackered.

Indeed, but there you go, if broadcasters must insist on these pointless 'live reports' from the steps of a building, delivering no more information than there would be doing it from the studio. Why was it necessary to have him planted outside the building at 22:00 hrs, couldn't Huw Edwards have conveyed the information Mark S was giving, in fact he had more or less anyway in the headline sequence ?
A prime example of presentation gimmicks getting in the way of actually reporting the story.

Hmmm, I wonder how they'll manage to do that from April 21st onwards?
Isn't the one o'clock news in the same situation at the moment? Not sure what they do, rarely see it.

To be fair I think this whole breaking news 'problem' with the simulcasts isn't really that bigger deal! Most people won't watch N24/ Sky incase breaking news comes up - if it's important enough for people to generally hear about it and switch over it can be covered by the nationals!
While I really appreciate 'breaking news' on rolling news channels, most people watch it because they want the main stories, possibly with a bit of in-depth or interview, but have missed/ the network bulliten.
When breaking news comes in during the one, it is played out on the ticker, and then dealt with indepth after the simulcast. Actually a lot of breaking news comes in with very little detail, and usually involves the presenter repeating it again and again for half an hour, before eventually getting in a correspondent and deciding it isn't that important! If it's important news, such as major political issue, Tsunami etc I don't see why it can't get a mention on the nationals, then pointing people to BBCi and the website!
Changing the topic, know one seems to have mentioned Newsnight last night (the reason for the ten coming from N
interviewing all three contenders for the london mayor live. In my opinion, Newsnight at its best! Interesting use of the studio too, ditching both chairs, sofas and desks for speaker-style podiums.
