Well there is a light box under the screens as well, in the gap between where the screen finishes and the grey bar next to the floor is. But the red and white stripes below the background are displayed on the screens.

It isn't strictly a light box AIUI (i.e. lamps within a box) - it is instead a bit of set that is front up/downlit by recessed neon. The white bit of the video projection is there because it was felt to look better than graphics going all the way to the bottom of frame, and matched the physical lighting effect nicely.

Riz Latif presented the 8pm update - is this a first? And - would this have come from BBC London's studios as she did BBC London News at 6.30.

Riz has previously presented the update and it has previously been confirmed that the London presenter goes across to Television Centre to present the 8pm bulletin

She presents from TV Centre where the bulleting is produced from. BBC London still need to do their regional bit - which Asad Ahmed presented tonight - from their studio.

It's interesting how well all the UK agencies are managing to cover developments in Zimbabwe. Do they have arrangements in place to be able to 'rush in' and report properly from Harare or Bulawayo?

I have cousins who grew up there, but left the country, and are eager to return. It seems a shame we aren't yet about to launch our campaign to rescue the country.
EDIT:
That wasn't meant to sound arrogant, I think the UK has an obligation to correct what we allowed to happen in 1980.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to point out the differences in Sky's and BBC's coverage of the flame...

The BBC seem to be miles ahead in their coverage with Emily at Wembely and now the O2 on the red carpet, BBC's sports editor at the O2, reporter and camera traveling with the flame, 2 correspondnts on the ground and a helicopter in the air. They also had a long live interview with Connie and they have managed to fit in weather and other news.

Sky have had live 'copter pictures all afternoon, but hardy any pictures from the ground, and it has been puncuated with adverts all the time. However, their anchor(s) seem to have a much better idea of what is going on than dear old Tim.

Probably better in the News 24 day-to-day thread, but you'll be excused this once!

Yes, but he must surely be getting tired by now, the amount of hours he does.

Sky focused on the protest aspect of the occasion, perhaps the BBC had additional focus on the actual relay?

I'll be intrigued if the BBC completely ignore this over the next half hour.
