I'm sorry to say he does have a point, though. A few years ago, I'd have completely disagreed with him but I can see where he's coming from. In the past few years, BBC One has got rid of Michael Buerk, Peter Sissons, Anna Ford, Moira Stuart and in 1999 they got rid of Martyn Lewis, Ed Stourton, Nicholas Witchell and Jennie Bond. Some of the reasons the BBC has given for getting rid of these presenters have been very dodgy and for me, it's too much of a co-incidence that they're all over a certain age.

Listen, Suzy, a self-produced budget show reel is a much more effective way of self promotion.

Rob, many of those (not all) left tv newscasting through choice, rather than any incidence of ageism.

John Humphrys famously likened tv newscasting as "the most boring, easy and condescending job around", in other words, sitting reading the autocue is not a challenging role. That's why he elected to leave and move into the lion's den that is "Today"!

OTOH, we all know too well what happened in Moira's case. That was, IMO, a case of ageism.

And Witchell is not that old, is he?

I don't think it's always necessarily ageism - but there has been a real change in news presentation in recent years. I'm afraid the BBC is heading down the same road that ITN and Sky went down a long time ago. Namely, lots of pretty young things on screen. This is a horribly superficial business, not remotely meritocratic. The only criteria for newsreaders these days seems to be how attractive you are.

Why was it necessary to post that?
