Although....they didn't have the top story ready and it still isn't ready at 13.10.

I stopped watching the moment all that drivel came up about the Oscars. That should be consigned to Entertainment24 and certainly not allowed anywhere near a national news bulletin.

There have been far less worthy things covered on National News. The death of a 2D fictional soap character last month for example. Rolling Eyes

Incidentally, where was that set that was used for sport on News 24? Was that just a corner of N8 with a different set or was it a different studio with its own gallery?

When News 24 first launched the sports bulletins came from the radio sport newsroom at Broadcasting House - as radio news was still based at BH prior to the opening of the News Centre. (News 24 launched from the current BBC World newsroom set which isn't in the News Centre)

When News 24 moved into their current newsroom set, which is on the same floor as the Sport News Newsroom and much of the Five Live newsroom, a small set was built in the corner of the Sport News newsroom - at the opposite end of the Mezzanine to News 24's newsroom set.

Sport News, in both locations, had small vision and sound mixers, a still store, a single camera, single person desk etc. using entirely separate technology to the News 24 operation. This was a very sensible decision in hindsight - as it allowed News 24 a break of 5-10'00" every hour most hours, with them just cutting to the Sport 24 output. Once News 24 became more reliable, it was possible to move Sport presentation to the News 24 set, and shift playout to the News 24 system, which is the case now.

For a while the Sport Interactive links were still recorded from that desk and camera - but it has now been dismantled ISTR.

This is what doesn't make sense - and needs to be rectified. They can do an OB from seemingly anywhere in the world, but a bulletin from a few feet down the corridor is considered impossible.

Then you are naïve.

I don't think that comment was justified. Brekkie was making a reasonable point about the questionable decisions that have apparently been made regarding quantity and allocation of galleries. When the ITV News Channel apparently had a more flexible set-up that allowed for better use of studio facilities, it seems bizarre that BBC News would opt for such a restrictive choice - although less so when it is clear that the choice has been made on purely financial grounds.

But the WHOLE point of the changes is to make the major cost savings the BBC has to make to continue under a licence fee settlement that is much lower than expected. It is a basic question of saving money in studios and galleries, or saving it by closing overseas bureaux, and cutting services.

Surely though part of cost saving and being more efficient is giving the smaller number of resources you may have greater flexibility - and considering they're spending months ripping out their galleries or something in the main studio, I hope these issues are addressed.

Yes, the BBC cost-cutting is long overdue, and yes they may have had a smaller licence fee settlement than expected (which still increases annually, and still compares very favourably to the commercial sector). Frankly though they could slash the BBC News budget by half and it would still be more than the budget ITV had for it's bulletins and the news channel

"PRINCE HARRY HAS SEEN FRONTLINE ACTION AGAINST THE TALEBAN IN AFGHANISTAN".

BBC News' global website is leading with this as "Breaking News". Have they gone mad??? What sort of editorial decision is this?

Edit. Sorry. I must be out of step with the rest of the world. ITN, Sky and even CNN International are leading with this as major Breaking News. I guess it must be important then.....

The news was broken by some foreign websites first. Sky & the BBC have only broadcast it after the MOD said they could.

Both organisations were out with the Prince in January to film a report and interview him and have been sitting on that report since then.

This isn't "news", his presence in Afghanistan is no more or less important than the thousands of other members of the armed forces.

If William ever died before having children then Harry would definately find himself speeding through a tunnel in a very fast car!

Why Tesco?

IMO that'd be the last thing I'd want on my CV.

The only way you'd get Tesco on your CV would be if you accepted a job collecting trollies. I doubt Dharshini's new role involves this.
