I have to agree with you there, noggin. It does, indeed, look very messy. It's a nice shot for that set but they should have tidied it up a bit. And, like you, I'm not a fan of seeing cameras either. They make it look messy, too. You never see a camera onscreen in N6 and this is the way it should be done. N6 looks far more neat and professional than that shot of N8 above.

On the plus side it is a huge improvement over the soft, poorly colour-balanced, noisy tracking camera that is overused on much of News 24's output - at least this is a broadcast quality camera.

I'm almost certain that at least one of the main cameras has a fault that causes a slight yellow tint to become apparent every ten/fifteen seconds or so. It has been like this for a long time. It's particularly apparent when the desk's white lighting is in shot.

In a word. No. Not really that lovely at all.

Messy shot, with a waste bin, foldback speaker, dangling mic on the floor, printer in the foreground, a floating chair between the two set areas, and lamps and cameras in shot, and the bbc on the website graphic is almost unreadable.

It is a good choice of shot for the space - but I'm afraid I can't describe it as "lovely".

(Not a fan of cameras in shot personally - kind of admits that you can't shoot your set well enough, or your set isn't big enough, to keep them out. People can argue that it is post-modern deconstruction of the production process - I'm afraid I think it looks messy and cheap)

Interesting - and I can see your point.

However, I still like it. "People can argue that it is post-modern deconstruction of the production process". Well, I wouldn't put it so arty farty, but subconciously, that's partly why it seems to work.

I think seeing cameras in shot is perfectly fine, what I really oppose to (and is sometimes done on C4 News) is seeing camera crew in shot. That really does look messy- especially when the presenter looks smart and the crew look like they've just got up! Wink

On another point I think the shot looks great. And as for the mess, I've seen N24's set a lot worse!

Yeah, I agree it needs a bit of tidying up, but I think the feeling of depth and activity makes the thing feel much more dynamic than the rather stale N6.

It definitely does, and this is what is worrying about the move to N6 for News 24. How will they recreate this dynamic atmosphere that is so essential for a rolling news channel? I fear it could end up feeling rather flat and slow compared to now, with the bustle of the real-life newsroom in the background. It's certainly going to be a challenge to bring this feel to N6, and I'll be watching with interest to see if they succeed...

They can pull off a nice background easily, but its just all the hussle and bussle, its going to be very quiet. It sounds stupid, but when Sky News first moved into their studio, you could here the newsroom a lot, and it sounded very busy. Being in a small studio, it will be hard to pull it off. Having said that, the ITN News Channel had a fairly modern studio with a newroom background and it looks nice.

Ah - we obviously think the entire opposite on this subject. Personally I VERY much dislike seeing cameras in shot - but hate it even more when they are locked off or remote and not crewed. It just emphasises the "we can't afford to operate these, or have someone move them so we leave them in shot" feeling.

At least one news organisation felt the same - as they used to make random people stand behind remote cameras during wide shots - even though they had nothing to do with the camera operation...

Don't think that excuses it as the end shot of a BBC One bulletin though - it isn't News 24...

I totally agree that the moving out of N8 will definately impact negatively in terms of atmos / environment; as well as the context of being physically within a busy and bustling newsroom, the 'engine room' of the operation - it isn't only what's visible behind the frosted glass, but also during daytimes, the background ambient noise, chatter, occasional phones ringing distantly etc - all very much lends itself to News 24, and the rolling news culture and environment that it champions so well.

Can anyone tell me what the FOV and Lens size (in mm) is for the cameras in N6. Looking at the measurements for the set, the cameras need to be using some kind of altered lens to make it appear that much bigger.

The name astons look a little odd without the Dog and Ticker along the bottom.
