Excuse me but I think Scotland should do as they're bloody well told by Network.

Everyone on here moans at all nations and regions on the BBC and ITV being the same, but when one does do something different, you still moan. The cost of doing this as a one off is negligible - all the crew are in anyway. Also BBC 1 Scotland has taken a bulletin from News 24 before.

The reason of course for tonights difference is the fact that it's New Year's Eve in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in Scotland it's Hogmanay. These are cultural differences with different programmes to reflect that. On this occasion the timings of the pre-recorded programmes during the evening must just not match up or something, which must be why there is a separate bulletin.

You'll never find me moaning about regions being the same. I'd abolish local news if it was up to me and just have everything coming from London.

No, everyone in the UK is having New Year's Eve tonight, even Scotland - they just call it something different to pretend they are more independent than they are!

i also notice weatherview is on half an hour earlier than network, is weatherview live or recorded? also seems odd that bbc one scotland are closing at 1.50 on the night where people are arguably the most likely to be still up in the early hours, in the country which claims to be the most enthusiastic about celebrating new year.
Weatherview's always pre-recorded - fairly early in the evening, ISTR.

Perhaps they're expecting people who've stayed at home to see in the New Year to be off to bed by 1, whereas people out partying won't be so interested in what's on telly. It does seem a little odd that they've not got a late film, though - perhaps pres just want to go home!

New Year in Scotland has always been more of a celebration than in other parts of the UK. Traditionally, Boxing Day hasn't been a public holiday, but January 2nd is.

Luckily... 1) You're not in charge of the BBC, and 2) your views counter the vast majority of research done which tends to suggest higher appreciation / demand for local news rather than national news.

What a lot of sh!t.

You may no nothing about the history of Hogmanay, but don't compound that by saying it here.

What's the difference then?

The festival has has Norse roots but took the form it currently has in the late 1600s. Hogmanay has always had huge significance in Scotland, far more than Christmas - which was a working day here until the 1950s. It certainly pre-dates the Act of Union.

Do some research if you're really interested, but saying Scots call it Hogmanay to, "pretend they are more independent than they are" is pretty offensive.

Watching BBC lunchtime news, and it made me realize how amazing nicholas owen is at reading news, they really should put him on at 6 or even 10.

I think he's best suited to the later weekend bulletins. Also I think he said he didn't want to be working too much at the BBC, so I'm not sure if he would want to do any of the major bulletins.

So does anyone know when the studio merry go round is starting? This weekend would seem the earliest sensible opportunity. Breakfast seemed to be in N6 this morning.

Eh, are you going to acknowledge how very wrong you were at all? It's amazing that you think it's OK to spout xenophobic rubbish like you have on here.
