End of the Six - just had jingle bells in the background, a falling snow effect keyed on screen, photos of houses decorated in festive lights and inflatable stuff, and a request for viewers to send in their own pictures of such houses.

Is it just me or is this just plain wrong on a BBC national news programme?

Leaving one area for presentation and one for sport/weather/business. I think one thing needed is a bigger desk.

Along with this I think it would be good if there were some other changes. I doubt we will see any, with it only being a year since the current look launched . But, if we did see any, I'd like to see some smaller and minimilistic graphics, more like the old national graphics, they were fantastic. Its a shame we had to see them go!

Actually the new set was introduced in May 2006, so that's over a year and a half by the time the changes are made.

This is what I think should happen...
Arrow Make the desk bigger
Arrow Add pillars (like seen in the Politics show) at corners and center
Arrow Add a small desk (such as used in Breakfast) with chairs (like the ones used in the Politics Show) for sports, business, entertainment and interviews.
Arrow Turn the main desk round a bit so it's more like Breakfast (for easier screen interviews).

Meanwhile I think the backdrop could be a new view of London (or another city), the view from TVC (such as politics show or the one show) or a view like World News Today.

That's how I'd do it anyway!

Technically, sharing the studio with Newsnight shouldn't be too demanded should it? Change the backdrop and the colour of the desk lights and wheel in the sofas if needed and you're there. Yes, the lack of rehearsal time immediately before transmission will be a pain but Newsnight's running order and agenda is decided (most of the time) well before 10 o'clock. They could do reports, interviews etc when the studio is free before the Ten team come in and then collaborate with them to make sure all their inserts are ready. Newsnight Review would be trickier, maybe that could be pre-recorded?

What would be interesting if there were a major developing story while the Ten were on air such as a shock resignation, that demanded analysis rather than N24 style rolling coverage. How on earth could they cope with that without flaffing round studios and sharing resources?

I Think this would be a great idea. But i don't really like the skyline backdrop. I think that a back drop like the 2005 one (2nd faker newsroom) if pulled off well could look good, with the "lightboxes" and glass bits

Easy - have Newsnight Review from another location, such as when it comes from film festivals. And why would it be a problem anyway? No one said rehearsals of the actual interview (if they do any) has to come from the set, and why couldn't the ten just stick to the desk - it doesn't have weather or any must-have-in-the-studio reports! That way the Newsnight sofa could sit there all the time, with the ten's opening coming from the desk.

Well normally noone resigns at 10 at night! Rolling Eyes and besides why can't the ten just mention it, News 24 opt out and Newsnight have a bit more detail for those without digital?

Personally I don't get the big problem! The one can't come from TC7 anyway because Working Lunch is on at the same time at points in the week, so will come from N8 almost certainly (like during the local elections) and the six will be moving to TC7 anyway so will compete with Newsround then! Meanwhile any on-set reports can surely just move to a location or CSO!

Yeh I don't particularly either but it's better than the empty newsroom effect they use during maintenence!

It could work, but I wonder if it's time to move away from that feel. The difference is when it was done in the 2005 era there were no lines from screens to make it look fake, where as they can't avoid that now! I think something like the Politics Show's backdrop works better but I don't know if it would work on a rolling channel! Part of me actually thinks a modified version of WNT's backdrop would be best overall!

Thinking back to the "virtual era" Six O'Clock News, and I can't ever imagine something like that happening back then. It just shows you how dumbed down TV news has become in 10 years or so.

looknorth,

This may well be a first, but I totally agree with YOU! When I switch on the BBC News, I do so for crisp delivery of the facts. I do not want to see newscasters and other presenters laughing their heads off.

Sorry for being an old humbug, but that's my opinion!

Merry Christmas in advance,
James

Not sure I like the sound of the jingle bells at the end of the 6 O'Clock news but bearing in mind it is followed by the regional news I can understand why they might want to take things in that direction.

As for the humour on News 24 - surely that is a good thing? The channel was so stuffy for so many years - even in the early days when it was probably aiming to be more 'friendly'.

Thing on the 6 - unexcusable as it was planned and cheap.

Thing on 24 - no problem at all. For one thing it was during the weather, not the news.

Interesting......

Chaos at BBC News

Well this changes things a bit. All news programmes coming from TC7 then from January for 10 weeks. So to revise my original guess...

Arrow January - Breakfast, 1, 6 and 10 move into TC7 leaving N6 free for upgrade
Arrow March/April - News 24 (including the 1, 6 and 10) moves into N6 leaving N8 free for upgrade
Arrow June/July - World moves into N8

Thing is, how will Working Lunch and Newsnight be affected? In the Mirror article it says Newsnight will have 7 minutes to prepare the set, so does this mean that it will be starting later? 10.40 perhaps?

They are completely wrong about the seven minutes.

It's actually six

The ending to the Six was innapropriate for a supposedly serious national news programme. Things like that should be left on the regional news where they can get away with it. Hopefully this sort of thing won't be on the programme again.

News 24 I think can get away with it. As Moz said at least it wasn't pre-planned and overall rather tacky.
