I agree that the two-presenter format isn't working for the Six at the moment. It is odd because between 1984 and 1999, it did work. Although it can be argued that the Virtual Era format was a bit ridiculous. Back then they had two presenters but one (usually Anna Ford or Martyn Lewis) was the primary presenter (who did the headlines sequence themselves) and the other was reduced to a secondary role. It sounds odd, but it did work.

Something is definitely missing from the BBC1 News now. I like Huw and George - they are the current heavyweights. I'm probably going to get shot down in flames for this but I feel that they've brought in too many young presenters too quickly. I like seeing young presenters on News 24 but for me, BBC1 should be where the very best, most experienced presenters can be found. Apart from Huw and George, I don't think any of the other current BBC1 presenters match up to Anna Ford, Martyn Lewis, Peter Sissons, Michael Buerk, John Humphrys et al.

I do think Huw is by far the best newsreader on the BBC at moment. George is also great but only when he is on his own.

I think Fiona, Dermot and Jane Hill are all very experienced presenters.

Natasha and Sophie are good but I think lack the heavyweights and experience need for BBC1.

Coloured? Haven't heard that term since my days in the Klan. Why not go the whole hog and call him a Negro!!!?

I think the term you're looking for is 'black'. Not quite so offensive. Rolling Eyes

Peter Sissons! He might've been able to handle the controlled autocuefest of the 80s and 90s bulletins but as soon as you throw him in anything with any sort of flexibility (ie. N24) he really does crash and burn, whilst occasionally even looking at the right camera.

There were two excellent pairings on the Six since its inception in 1984:

Sue Lawley and Nicholas Witchell
Peter Sissons and Moira Stuart

But, the Six has seen countless anchors since its creation:

Lawley / Witchell / Paxman / Hayton / Harvey / Coverdale / Lowe / Humphrys / Dando / Smartt / Bond / Edwards / Lewis / Stuart / Ford / Sissons / Buerk / Raworth / Williams / Turnbull / Alagiah / Jordon / Brown / Hill / Esler.......

Who have I missed out?

Ben Brown was scheduled for the '6' all this week, it wasn't a last minute thing...

Obviously he's done some good work, reporting from war zones and far flung areas of the world, and when he first arrived in the 19.00 slot on N24 he was incredibly wooden - but he has relaxed and improved very quickly, has loosened up and developed himself on air well, is much more confident now, and is very watchable in the evenings on N24.

The philosophy behind various different presenters appearing on the nationals is that they simply draw from the pool of presenters, (i.e. not neccesserily having first choice relief presenters for national bulletins), and therefore there will be lots more 'mix and match' going on.

I'm not talking about his skills on News 24. I'm talking about BBC1 where, I believe, he was an excellent presenter.

You've missed out Fiona Bruce - she was Huw's relief presenter during the 1999-2003 era.

And that's the problem. There is no consistency of presenters on the Six any more and arguably, some of the ones in the 'pool' are not experienced enough presenters to be anchoring BBC1 bulletins, IMO.

Yes, Francis Coverdale did the Six in the early days. In fact, she was one of the original stand-in anchors along with Jeremy Paxman. Eventually, Philip Hayton and Andrew Harvey became the regular stand-in presenters.

Smartt is Mike Smartt. He used to be a SE England Correspondent and then moved to occasional newsreading (weekends and summaries, etc). He eventually graduated onto stand in on the Six, occasionally the Nine and sometimes the One.

Sorry - can't believe I forgot Natasha Kaplinsky.

Who is Diana Modall? Do you mean Madill?? Did she actually do the Six??

Chris Lowe was a frequent stand in. Gavin Esler only did it once, IIRC. China Red era.
