Looking at this, that wierd news bullitin that was aired the day of the 2000 power cut on bbc world/news24/bbc1 it looks like gavin is presenting from a small tinny space in front of a CSO screen but my main question is how did the BBC WORLD countdown/on screen identity/announcment all come to be on the westminster gallery along with the N24 headline bed and weekend news titles because when they were down there in 2003 they had a nice big desk(it was quite similler to the normall n24 set)but they had literally no graphics or titles the only thing they seemed to have was the N24 titles,so how did they load the full graphics package and sound onto the system so fast in 2000. Confused:

Maybe they took tapes with them in 2000 but didn't get a chance in 2003?

I believe it is.They may pull the shot out slightly at times but that's it. The other section of the set is used for Wide Angle - a PBS programme which features world news. The studio is based at WNET 13 - New York's local PBS.

With Natasha Kerplonkersky going, I think it's time for a overhaul at BBC News. Here's how I'd do it:

Breakfast: Sian & Bill (Mon-Thu)
Charlie & Susanna (Fri-Sun)
with either Simon or Kate filling in

Keep Sophie on the 1, with either Louise or Emily on Friday. Then have George and Dermot share the 6 single handedly, with maybe Jane Hill or Ben Brown filling in. The 10 could then stay exactly the same, with the world's best newsreader Ben Brown presenting at weekend

V interseting!

If fiona moves to the 1, I'd like to see Mishal Hussein cover for her on the ten. She's got much more integrity than a lot of newsreaders like silverton or maitlis (though they're both OK) & it's about time she was on BBC1 bullitens. (edit: other than weekends)

You're mistaken as to what happened.

AIUI BBC World presentation was still up and running - so the countdown and BBC World ident played weren't at BBC Westminster they were still at TV Centre (Presentation still continued from TVC on emergency power)

The studio wasn't a CSO - it was the standard BBC Westminster newsroom studio at the time - used for Westminster Live and Dateline London, with a BBC News set piece attached to the column in the back of shot. There was a gauze that could be pulled round to diffuse the background.

In 2003 the evacuation may have been for different reasons and thus the presentation handled differently. The set available at BBC Westminster was thus also different, as the sets for programmes made in Westminster had changed. Of course when you evacuate to a studio centre - you don't usually have time to put a new set in - so you make do with what is available when you arrive. If they've just been recording a desk based discussion programme, you use that. If the studio is empty but the newsroom set is available, you use that.

It was interesting to hear that the BBC Election team were scrambled together 10 days ago and preparing for an election campaign. Surprised

Really? I would have thought this possibility would have been thought of way back when Tony Blair announced his retirement date.

Yes - "thought about" and actually assembling a team aren't the same thing. There are a large number of jobs that need to be done in the run-up to an election - but you can't start doing these until you know the election date...

Sp that explains why John Sopel was so annoyed about journalists being messed about, on today's Politics Show.
