If my memory is correct, and I havn't missed anything, thats the first time we've seen Ben on mainstream bulletins since 2002....

No he anchored the Sunday 10 from Beruit last year, before Huw got there the next day.

It does seem the BBC are testing alot of new faces on the nationals recently, for example Emily on the 1, Mishal doing the weekend news and Ben on the 6. Plus Louise doing the sunday bulletins a few weeks ago. What seems odd today is that Emily has been on the 1, when Jane has been in doing News 24. So does this quash the earlier rumour that Jane is the 2nd presenter for the 1 o'clock news, she has not been on the nationals as much of late. The BBC may be trying to find a new role for Emily, afterall it seems Joanna has permanently replaced her for the evenings on News 24, as Emily has now been back for 3 weeks and has made an appearnace in a variety of daytime slots. Plus she is not on Newsnight that often due the to the volume of presenters. I do think however that Emily has done very well on the 1 this week, and hope she continues to make regular appearaces on the programme.

Does seem to be a lot of mixing...although...i could have sworn Sophie did the One once this week...many I didn't focus properly though.

Also seems strange that Mishal keeps making apperances at the weekend...i'd have thought that Matthew or someone from News 24 would have shown up instead...not complaining...do like her.

All these try outs for the One...makes me think that in fact it'll just be whoever is available to cover when Sophie is off.

There is not, and as far as I know will not be, a second presenter for the One O'clock News (at least for the moment)...

Mishal now does BBC World four days a week and the nationals on a fifth day which will include some editions of the One O'clock News...

I dont think that there is a pecking order (for want of a better word) but a pool of presenters are now working the nationals on a regular basis instead of one or two regular stand-ins...hence why Jane was on News 24 instead of covering on the One and/or Six as usual...It also, one presumes, blends News 24 and the National bulletins even further...

I'm not sure about Emily though - in my opinion, she has been one of the weaker presenters of the One O'clock News and is better suited to BBC News 24...(even though she's no good in the evening slot)

Sophie was only on once this week and even then she sounded ill.

For tonight's Ten O'Clock News, Fiona Bruce is live in Paris and Natasha Kaplinsky is in the studio in London.

Anyone else find that 'pretend to pass the paper from one reporter to another' on the climate change thing a bit cringeworthy? Seems a bit amateur!

There is likely to be another reshuffle next year when BBC News moves back to Broadcasting House, I would have thought.

...

That won't be happening next year!

Eh!! When did this come about? Last I heard it was Summer/Autumn 2008... Shocked

I'm currently back home and have a few comments to make. First of all, though some of the graphics may seem a little off to others in the Forum, they are, for the most part, excellent. I have a bug bear about how the 'Breaking News' or 'Top Stories' banner appears, but the on screen look is great.

With regard to Emily Maitliss on the One, I have to say that she is - on all honesty - the new Anna Ford. Some members of this forum will regardless criticise, but a host of them will not remember Ford when she first started, nor will they be appreciative of her as her tenure as an anchor went on. Maitliss is composed, lucid, with perfect pitch, rythym and timbre. Her delivery is faultless.

Yet these criticisms and expectations of individuals and networks is, perhaps, a sad reflection on society. Though I live now in the US and work for CBS, there are some conclusions that can be drawn. How is it that we criticise those who currently anchor the flagship bulletins? The likes of Edwards, Alagiah et al all come from distinguished journalistic backgrounds, as did Buerk, Sissons, Ford, Dimbleby, Whitmore, etc. And whilst there are those that criticise Kaplinsky, it should be stressed that FIRSTLY, there are members of this forum who praise Moira Stuart, irrespective of her journalistic pedigree; Kaplinsky has far more qualifications than Stuart. Secondly, how is Kaplinsky any different to Angela Rippon, to Anna Ford on TV-AM?

There is, all too frequently in this day and age, a reflex to criticise those who present the news, who relate the events of world and distill them for our need. Yet we do not stop to think about what they are doing. We do not stop to think about how they deliver the news, how they relate to us. In recent years, we have come to place anchors on a pedestal, to idolise them in some small way, yet all they do it sit in the studio and ask a few questions. And for this, they are criticised. Remember that they are journalists, regardless of capacity or qualification. They draw on their expertise, their knowledge, and that of those around them.

Who really cares who reads the news? Who really cares how the news is delivered? I want somebody who has some expererience, some insight - maybe a different one - to tell me about the world. Walter Cronkite was a domestic news correspondent with few foreign postings, yet became the voice, the fac, the reason of America. He understood the pitfalls of Vietnam, the joys of the Moon.

We should think about these things. Would I like to have Angela Rippon read the news? Yes. Does it bother me that she danced Ernie and Eric? Not in the slightest. Because it was entertainment. And just as the BBC News and Weather Team do something for Children in Need, so too did Rippon. Political correctness, a distorted 'propriety' and 'twisted morality' have taken hold of this country.

I personally don't like having random fill ins on a regular basis - I'd much rather see a regular stand in who can begin to estabhlish themselves even if it's hosting just one day a week.

Leave the random hosts to fill in for the fill ins, or on Bank Holidays etc.

Obviously they've got Fiona for the 10pm, they've got Breakfast pretty much sorted and there are obvious candidates to fill in at 1pm.

It's the 6pm stand-ins they need to sort out - they need a regular male stand in for George. And as politically correct as it might be, IMO Jane Hill and Natasha Kaplinsky are not a good partnership - not so much because they are two women, but more because they're partnership just doesn't work.

I think what you have to remember is all the presenters work for BBC News so in theory they can appear anywhere - be that BBC One Nationals, News 24 or BBC World. That's all that's happening.

in reality we'll never see Fiona Bruce on BBC World or Lyse Doucet on National News!

We are off on one, BIrd flu hits Britain, doom gloom and misery.
How long before this story mutates faster than the virus? Bird flu down to global warming which causes a drought which leads to best ever 'A'' level results.
The BBC seems to be flapping more than the unfortunate Turkeys which have caught a cold Rolling Eyes

It's all a plot by the Department for the Elimination of Farming and Rural Affairs.

It not really bird flu, they just need an excuse to cull the turkeys because the police want to interview them regarding the cash for honours enquiry.
