It's a bad idea to merge the two new services, both channels serve different audiences, if I want global news I switch the dish over to 19.2e and World News HD and keep it at 28.2e if I want BBC domestic news.

Doesn't World News generate income that can be used to fund BBC News? If so, it would be a ridiculous decision to merge the channels.

I think they shouldn't merge but just brand WORLD NEWS as just BBC News.

I'd hate it if they merged Cbeebies and CBBC together.

Quote:
BBC World News is the prime means by which the BBC distributes its television news and current affairs programmes to international audiences. But it does not have the same reputation for quality as the World Service – which is renowned for its radio output. This is in part a question of funding: BBC Global News, the commercial subsidiary that operates the service, had revenues in 2014/15 of just £94 million, less than 10 per cent of the revenues of BBC Worldwide, and a staff of just 120. The BBC must ensure that all its prominent international services have a reputation for delivering high quality, distinctive output. The new unitary board should therefore consider what reforms are needed to improve the quality of BBC World News

And combining the two will accomplish that? I and many here doubt it.

I wouldn't know what to call it to make it suitable for both age ranges.

It's perhaps worth noting the current (typical) weekday schedule for the news channel...
- 06:00-08:30 Breakfast (as per BBC One)
- 08:30-09:00 BBC Business Live (BBC World simulcast)
- 09:00-11:00 Victoria Derbyshire (also shown on BBC Two)
- 11:00-13:00 BBC Newsroom Live (first hour also shown on BBC Two)
- 13:00-13:30 BBC News at One (as per BBC One)
- 13:30-17:00 BBC News
- 17:00-18:00 BBC News at Five
- 18:00-18:30 BBC News at Six (as per BBC One)
- 18:30-18:45 Sportsday
- 18:45-20:30 BBC News
- 20:30-21:00 HARDtalk (BBC World simulcast)
- 21:00-22:00 Outside Source (BBC World simulcast)
- 22:00-22:30 BBC News at Ten (as per BBC One)
- 22:30-22:30 Sportsday
- 22:40-23:00 The Papers
- 23:00-23:15 BBC News
- 23:15-00:00 Newsnight (repeat of BBC Two programme)
- 00:00-06:00 BBC World Simulcast

Already there are quite a few programmes that are already simulcasts of BBC World, as well as programmes that are also shown on BBC One/Two. (Admittedly some of the BBC One/Two simulcasts may have signing.)

If the proposals go ahead I'd hope that the 9am to 6pm schedule would remain non-BBC World News, even if the afternoon programme gets branded as 'Newsroom live'. It wouldn't surprise me if the majority of the 7-10pm schedule becomes a BBC World simulcast. I'd also expect the majority of BBC One bulletins to also be shown on the news channel.

Perhaps they could make the domestic channel a Monday to Friday operation and make weekends a joint operation throughout.

Be interesting to see how far this gets compared to recipes...

I must admit I do wonder how well it will work (if it happens), but some of the responses on this topic have pretty much been "I say it won't work, so it won't work'...
