To me it just looks like a shiny black surface, a bit like the floor...why would they have a mirror there?
So that from certain angles (on camera) the printer appears invisible. All you should see is the reflection of the rostrum and studio floor. Its a "trick".

Interesting that the News Channel is now being streamed in Flash on the BBC News website rather than the old Real/WMV format.
