Yes we've seen with World they can adopt the sets to the colour of the shows such as orange for Impact and dark blue for Newsnight, Focus on Africas lighting is amazing, its gonna be great whilst we are sad to see the historic TVC go, News Channel will benefit in presentation terms, something it hasn't had since 2009 imho.
Its unfortunate that their lack of resources hasnt allowed them to develop in a similar way to how BBC World News has in the last five years. I cant help thinking that following the honeymoon period after this move they will revert back to the same monotonous 'two shrubs behind a desk' formula that has plagued the channel for the better part of a decade.
Watched newswatch earlier on NC and someone emailed in saying that the red lamp shaded lights looked like Christmas bauble baubles but the presented corrected him/her by saying that they are lighting. Why use this lighting and where is it aimed at
Because red lighty-up balls look nice.
Anymore questions?
In the past I've often been criticised for saying that a return to stood-up presentation (even just at the start of the hour and at the half hour after the sting) would 'damage' the channel as it looks more formal with the presenters seated.
As much as I recognise what people say about 'the good old desk and presenter scenario' - we're in the 21st century now, technology and the way people consume the news has evolved. We now have the ability to get news online, Twitter and other means - which are extremely visual.
The BBC News channel, although 'Britain's most watched news channel' can't just 'stay the same' because it's safe. A little imagination costs nothing and over the past 4 years, although I've thought the titles sequences were much better than anything pre-2003 - the channel has suffered from just feeling stale. It's not the backdrop, or graphics, it's the presenters being couped up together constantly, no visual explanations from the Barco wall except during business.
I suppose what I'm saying is the channel needs to be able to have light and shade. Just because presenters are standing up to explain a story - doesn't make it seem less formal. It's how the delivery to camera is carried out.
From what I've been told (previously) in various forms was that stood up presentation in
N6 would look messy because of the shape of the studio if there are 2 presenters. Plus, cameras have to be manually moved in to position (although News 24 managed OK in
N8 ).
I always said a return to the 2003 presentation style, stood up
TOTH's and presenters venturing into the newsroom for interviews (in moderation) adds an edge to it. Presenters moving into the newsroom may not suit a network bulletin - but for a rolling news channel, you still need to have that attention grabbing factor. This mixed with the 2008 rebrand with consitency of graphics and all news under one name would make a visually nice experience for the viewer (and bring network news in presentation terms, in line with the News channel).
The Lambert report in the early 2000's stated the channel needed to stand out, which it did... until 2008/9.
In conclusion I think that just because the viewer may not notice the presenter has moved into the Newsroom for an interview/is standing up to explain a story at the TOTH - doesn't mean it shouldn't be done at all.
Anyway enough of my waffling.
