What is a BARCO as I have heard people mention it a few times on here

The boxes/cubes that you see that make up the big screens around the presenters. Barco are the suppliers/manufacturers that the BBC used in their TVC news studios.

DTV posted:

The Barcos in TC7 last night looked well and truly burnt out, as do the ones in N6. Wink

I take it these aren't the same Lamps in the Barcos since 2006.

Nope, I believe TC7 was upgraded to the new self correcting screens in 2009 and N6 at Christmas 2010.

I wonder what BBC News will use when they have to move up to the virtual studio as in will they use a virtual newsroom or a realistic newsroom

So the first 'normal' handover to NBH from Salford, will be on Wednesday morning, Tuesday being Pope Franciscus' inauguration, with full coverage (2hrs 45mins) on BBC ONE from 0815. The NC might start then, but will inevitably be simulcasting significant portions of the CTV coverage as it continues.

Reflection on the current set up once again and the infamous virtual newsroom background. We've all been very critical of it and now we know it was never meant to be used for so long. The night version actually looks decent even today but it's the daytime version that became a total mess, transforming into some kind of fluorescent radioactive green. It's like something from a bad sci fi B movie. It was more gray and in the beginning and looked ok.

These 2 caps say it all really

I tweeted Lightwell a while back about the daytime backdrop (as they produced them). They responded by saying that when BBC News upgraded the screens in N6 - they had them set to lower brightness levels to make the projection cubes last longer. Lightwell then had to ammend the daytime backdrop to compensate for it. They said on their tweet that the original daytime backdrop was far superior (or words to that effect) than the second version. Occasionally, on weekends who ever is in the gallery first thing sometimes puts the original backdrop up by accident (the one that doesn't have the blue tint). The lifts certainly didn't seem as prominent in the second version daytime backdrop either.

I agree with that. The nighttime backdrop has actually always been great, it's the only thing not looking tired. The daytime backdrop has always been awful, the original was marginally better. When the accidently put the old backdrop on now it looks way worse though - I'm guess the change in technology means it looks worse?

Both those caps are very over-saturated compared to normal, and they certainly don't look as bad as that on screen. Here's a couple of caps of mine showing the day-time and night-time backdrop as they look normally.
