Weekend 24 was shown on BBC Two in the morning at the weekend (originally on just Saturday or Sunday, not sure if eventually both), and started quite soon after News 24 launched (when it was still in N9)

It was an early scheduled opt-in and opt-out into News 24, and had its own pretty distinctive style.

Yes, sadly by the time I started watching it, Weekend 24 had adopted the generic BBC News 24 branding (the 1999-2003 branding) and was essentially no different to any other hour on News 24, except for the fact it was presented by the Breakfast team (Darren Jordon and Sarah Montague/Sian Williams as I recall). I'd liked to have seen it during the flags era.

Definitely a case of 'Chris, you're the last one out - can you turn the lights off please!'... Reminds me of the empty newsroom behind the Ten O'clock news presenters in the early 90s.
Ten O'Clock? Early 90s? You sure your memory is OK?

It probably isn't - I'm showing my age.

Anyway, something I've knocked up - a tribute to the countdowns from TV Centre (not a brilliant piece of work as it was knocked up in 10mins). I think I included all the countdown 'styles' except the World cup ones - although was done from memory.

What countdown track did you use in that video?

One that I found on a Youtube video - I think it was an unused one.

Sounds like the BBC Persian countdown track with a few of the drums taken out.

It's this one. (Labeled as "BBC International Countdown" in his website.)

Looks like it was still going in 2002 as seen here....28/12/2002

It's quite interesting looking at News 24/News channel over the years.

1999-2003: Desk based presentation/formulaic
2003-2008: Varied presentation inc stand up presentation
2008-2013: Desk based presentation/formulaic
2013+: Varied presentation inc stand up presentation

I do think that from what we've seen, the BBC have put the best of the 2003 and 2008 revamps together for the 2013 revamp. The 2003 varied presentation style, with the strong 2008 branding. Interesting, as I thought that's the route they should go down for this relaunch.

I do miss the more informal style of News 24's launch. It felt more approachable and more immediate.

I always liked that era. My favourite period (presentation wise) was always from 2005-2007 (not the graphics or titles mind you) because they made good use of the studio.

So what was Weekend 24? I'm presuming that was before Weekend Breakfast got simulcast on One and the NC?

Weekend 24 was originally News 24's weekend breakfast programming. I don't think it disappeared as soon as BBC Breakfast replaced Breakfast News and began simulcasting on News 24. I seem to recall that Saturday's segment was still called Weekend 24 well into 2001 even though Sunday used Breakfast's branding. Around that time at least part of W24 was simulcast on BBC1/2.

Hopefully someone will have a clearer recollection than I do. But it has been 13 years and I've seen a lot of formats and presenters come and go in that time!

Weekend 24 was Saturdays only 0800-0900 BBC Two/BBC News24. It used the same soft set that Europe Direct used in 1998, I think opposite the News24 desk in N9, in the position where The World Today set ended up from late 1998 to early 2000.

I think it was the extended coverage of the Iraq War that finally finished it off - it was extended to 0700-0900 on BBC Two and later just became "Breakfast", ending up on BBC One. At the time of the Iraq War, the same presenters presented "Breakfast" from 0600 on BBC One/BBC News 24. By 0700 BBC One went to children's programmes and the News 24 programme turned into "Weekend 24". That was the time when you had programmes like Liquid News, Gate 24 and Reporters filling the back half hour at 0630.

Will be interesting to see what backdrop they use on the 5pm hour from Studio C (will it be a live newsroom shot on the screen behind the presenter?).

I wonder how Studio A will look at 9pm, not too fake I hope!

We can hope but the times I've seen samples of it's use for a Newsnight interview and for a foreign language bulletin, it certainly doesn't look as sleek as ITV.

My goodness, how old is that picture they put up on screen of Nicholas Witchell who was just on the phone? He looked about 20 years younger!
