I doubt they'll go down the virtual route. It would look ridiculous.

Have you seen Breakfast's backdrop?

Seriously? ...we're speculating about a virtual christmas tree? Who cares... Bah Humbug!

A virtually Christmas Tree? Does that actually mean a "Thanksgiving Tree"? Or a "Halloween Tree"? Or a "Guy Fawkes Tree"?

How random was that. Sigh.

FWIW: I think they should put up a REAL tree in N6, just to mark the departure from TVC. Next year, they can have as many virtual trees as they like in BH. Perhaps Norway could donate a tree to N6 this year?

Failing that, we could ask Blue Peter to make something out of coat hangers and tinsel to be suspended above Mathew Amroliwala's head.

How random was that, too. Sigh.

A couple of afternoon funnies on the News channel today.

Starting off with Sophie Long getting a fit of the giggles over the BBC's Twitter person talking about the Autumn Statement (@Peacheyk).

Second... Ben Rich gets in a tangle when he finds he hasn't pinned his microphone to his jacket.

I'm afraid I can't get excited about the News Channel's virtual tree - it was far better at the start of the last decade when they'd have a proper tree behind the set.

But they did have the added benefit of the real newsroom behind the presenters in N8 in which it could be placed.

I wouldn't have thought they'd be able to put a real tree in N6 as it would obscure the Barcos behind the presenters (even though they rarely put anything on the screens behind the presenters apart from the fake newsroom!).

IIRC, when the News channel decamped to N9 a couple of Christmas's ago (when the Barco screens were upgraded) they used the real/artificial Breakfast tree in that studio.

I'm sure when they move to NBH, they will have a real/artificial tree in the newsroom behind studio E.

Would there be enough room for a Christmas Tree at the back? You couldn't have it in the middle, as there's the cable tidy there (I think), and you couldn't have it either side as the room's needed for going to correspondents, etc.

Calling on Media Boy for an answer, he may be able to explain further.

Suppose you could have it in the middle if you have a stand that clears the tidy and is stable?

Could it not go in the "curve" that continues outside of the studio, behind the glass in the newsroom?

N6 itself is about 4 feet away from the back wall, the presentation area (desk) - the tree would look weird being that close! That being said they could make a cardboard platform over the cable ducting to house a tree!

There's a risk though a tree being that close to the presenters could go over, that'd be great telly but not great news!

It might also look a bit odd on the side shots - the tree would be behind the presenters on the head shots, but look like it's been plonked in the middle of nowhere on the side shot.

Not sure the best place to post this, but I noticed in the last few days following a software update, the splash-screen on the BBC News iPhone app has changed from the design on the left to the new one on the right...

I wonder if this might be a taste of things to come in terms of new titles when everything moves to NBH. Personally I think the new version looks a bit bland and drab without the orange and without detailing such as the criss-cross effect within the continents.
