Yes, I was actually surprised there was no news report on BBC1. It was a pretty amazing human achievement and having watched it live on the BBC News Channel, I have to say I think it will be one of the events I remember for the rest of my life. Watching the capsule door open and him stepping out on to a ledge was really nerve-wracking stuff and thankfully made for terrific television (it could easily have been a disaster though). So, yes, I think it should have been on BBC1.

Some comment on Social Networks, BBC NC covered Baumgartner's jump. Should it have been carried as a break in to BBC ONE's schedule is the question?

I love the way you use his name as if everyone knows who he is. But to answer no.

Do you live in a cave? Everyone does know who he is. Even in Uruguay.

I knew what and who he was on about, I even watched it live. Couldn't have told you who his name though.

(Yes I do know that the BBC NC is now available on ALL UK transmitters, since last Wednesday.)

Things like this should be left to the NC as everyone now has access to it now. It's hardly REALLY important as in a disaster / death etc which is what a news break should be for. It's a trivial moment really in my eyes. Yes it was an achievement but not important at all.

Yes, if you aired this live on BBC One, where would it stop? Land speed record attempts?

If it happened to be taking place at the same time as The One Show, then maybe. But it's hardly the same as man stepping on the moon for the first time which won't happen again.

Thought it was interesting that Sky didn't seem to air it at all (certainly when I flicked over a few times). After all the guff they stick with live for ages you'd think they'd carry something like that.

That's rather pedantic. Ok, I shall rephrase it for you... I watched it as live as anyone else could outside of mission control.

It would be a little OTT to have broken into programming on BBC One to report it as it happened. It would probably infuriate more viewers than it would please. It was on the BBC News bulletin just before it happened and was referenced to watch the news channel. Unscheduled News Reports really should only be used for the most serious or urgent of situations otherwise they loose their importance if over used and people wouldn't sit up and take note.

Maybe they didn't have rights to broadcast it "live" and the BBC did?

There was a live stream on the Red Bull Stratos website though. So I don't see how Sky News wouldn't have the rights to it....

I'm not sure you quite understand how broadcasting rights work. Just because it's on the web doesn't mean Sky could use it.
