It seemed alright, but you couldn't really work out what she was saying, poor girl, it wenton fo about 10-15 seconds before the end of her weather report, I think that the weather is shown too many times, is it really necessary for the weather to be shown at the half past too?

Might surprise you but weather forecasts are one of the most popular bits of news output... (Backed up by quite significant audience research)

Especially if certain presenters are on shift! Wink

I think it was introduced at the same time that the One/Six/Ten O'Clock News introduced a look that matched the continuous news channel (and they started sharing a studio for the One/Ten - and a common look for the Six).

The aim was for the continuous and BBC One output to look like part of the same wider "BBC News" operation - so branding the channel as "BBC News" was seen as part of this.

Branding the channel as "News 24" had given it a slightly 'poor relation' status and distanced it from the One/Six/Ten output a bit. Branding it as BBC News brought it to the core of the operation.

Although, it's hard to argue against the fact that it's probably even worse now than it was then.

When it was BBC News 24, people used to refer to it as "News 24" or "N24" (especially the latter online). But it was still clear you meant the BBC's news channel, as no other station shared a similar name. However, since the renaming, I think it's technically meant to be just the "BBC News" channel, rather than "BBC News Channel" but it has evolved into the latter. The problem now is when people say "BBC News" do they mean network news or the news channel? And what's worse, people still drop the "BBC" and refer to it as either the "News Channel" or even "NC". Considering there was also the ITN/ITV News Channel (admittedly not any more) it merely adds confusion.

Personally, I think they were envious of Sky News. To everybody it's simply "Sky News". No alternatives. But what the BBC seemed to fail to understand is that Sky News is Sky News; they don't have any other network/channel to broadcast on, so it's easy. The BBC is too complicated with too many channels to pull something like that off effectively. "News 24" was a distinctive brand in itself and was just building up a following due to digital switchover when they changed its name. I think they should have kept it.

I wouldn't disagree with much of that - I didn't take the decision!

However I think that "News 24", although distinctive and well recognised, wasn't that great a brand, particularly as few people called it "BBC News 24" - and the "BBC" is a key part of any BBC brand. That said - lots of people call it "The News Channel" these days...

Is it just me but is the BBC News Channel just acting as the BBC Olympic Channel at the moment?
I switch on and off during the day and instead of any mix of olympics and news, it's all olympics. Haven't the BBC got enough channels to concentrate the games on, without using it's one outlet left for a little bit of balance?
Surely if people want to know about the Olympics, they have the other channels to watch. If I want to watch the News, I'm buggered on the News Channel.

But as itsrobert says, people knew it was the BBC, even if it people didn't say 'BBC'. Similarly, people know Newsnight is a BBC show and thus it's unnecessary for Jeremy Paxman to continually say 'BBC Newsnight'.

That said, I do agree there was a feeling that News 24 was an inferior service to the network bulletins. Not entirely convinced that attitude has changed though.

I think it's mainly being carried so heavily on the news channel as it broadcasts in hospitals, waiting rooms etc as the only channel shown, so that's why the BBC have decided to bombard the channel with coverage.

It's ridiculous, World is not doing better either plus they can't even show any videos. It was fun the first week as a tune up but now it's just too much. Other, more important things are happening around the world, major developments in Syria, financial decisions and meetings etc.

Well, the way I refer to BBC News (Channel) is just as "BBC News" because the bulletins - at least during the week - are referred to as "BBC News at One", "BBC News at Six" & "BBC News at Ten", at the weekends, the way I think of it is that BBC One 'Network' pseudo-'opts in' to BBC News. That is my way of thinking about the situation.

Personally the name "News 24" as much as I liked it at the time when it was around, since the rebrand in '08 I am not so fussed about whether they brought it back or not. As in my mind thinking about it, it gave the channel an identity but also made it separate itself - purposely or not - from the rest of the "BBC News Family" by having bulletins labelled on the EPG if I remember rightly "BBC News" but referring to them on air as "BBC News 24". Because I don't in my mind remember any bulletins listed as:
12:00 BBC News 24
13:00 BBC News 24

And also I am sure it got confusing when the online stream of the channel got active, with references to watching 'BBC News, 24 hours a day' is that the bulletins or the channel.
