Robert Hall doing a live back to the studio from Oxford Circus tube station, standing on the platform to the amazement of Ben Brown. Is this a first on the News channel?

Ben Brown said it was a broadcasting first, but I do believe Sky News did something similar last Friday.

Sky did a live from a Jubilee line train once it was overground with Ian Woods. The NC live was probably done using the new free wi-fi connection that has been installed across tube stations in time for the Olympics.

Yeah but Virgin Media has made it a pay as you go service, non paying users only get a webpage showing Online Travel Information.

So it must have cost the Beeb a small fortune...

So is it free or not?

They are only making it a pay as you go service after the summer, so it should be free to use at the moment

Quote:
WiFi access to the Virgin Media portal will always be available to all London Underground customers. For the summer we're giving everyone full internet access. After that, full internet access will be available to customers of Virgin Media and selected networks, as well as on a Pay As You Go basis.

Hmm..

Meanwhile, the News Channel are using N9 this hour for headlines - terribly lit - which strikes me as odd as they were in N6 in the last hour. Are they using the N6 gallery for the Six now then - or is N6 out of action?

I just watched it back on BBC iPlayer. Did they cut to the other weather position half way through the broadcast?

They just used N9 for the 18:30 headlines too, really poorly lit and clearly no autocue working as Fiona was reading off paper.

N6 back on the air, so I can only assume it was needed for the Six.

Why would it be used for the six? Because the six was at Stratford so why would it have been needed???

Someone will be able to give you a more technical explanation of why but N6 or TC7's (whichever one was used tonight) gallery is still needed to broadcast on TV.

I would imagine that N6 is playing in the pre-recorded material, certainly for non-Olympic material and possibly originating graphics.

The national bulletins involve three galleries at the moment - Lund Point (Olympic Park), N6 and TC4 which is switching between Lund Point and upscaled N6 to produce an HD programme. The astons may be being added by TC4.
