If I was working on there, I'd choose the background with the use of a dice for a week, just to annoy the people who get upset by the "wrong" background being used...

I'd use several dice on a rota.

. . . or a single sturdy die. Wink

I'd call that die, "Tim"

Looks like they're having some technical problems in N8 tonight, the Barco wall is currently just black.

Also leading up to the TOTH they didn't show the countdown as usual, just the end of the TV licensing advert then a few second late start to the headlines.

It seems strange seeing Newsday from that angle, but I quite like it.

Edit: It appears to be back on now but just showing a static image.

Very very poor editorial judgement from the BBC this morning. Hosni Mubarak has been found guilty and sentenced in Egypt, with a riot outside the courtroom. After about 5 minutes BBC Breakfast moved on. Fair enough on BBC1, but why has the NC not been switched to WN? Saturday Kitchen Preview and Sport when Sky, CNN and probably every other major news channel is live in Cairo

Completely agree. Although after 10 Sky quickly went to rolling jubilee and ignored Cairo while BBC News did give reasonable coverage. Could the news channel not have kicked in earlier this morning - since they no longer share a studio?

There was a lovely panning shot of the BBC Sport newsroom at the beginning of Sportsday just then on the BBC News Channel. It just shows you how light the newsroom is in comparison to the actual studio, which is just too dark - which we have heard alot about already! I shall repeat again that they are not using this great studio to its potential, but aside from the lighting, the layout and space is very good indeed. A nod to Broadcasting House with this shot definitely!

I see they put a third screen behind the desk during this two-presenter Sportsday in addition to the other two screens used for the one-presenter shot. It has grey edges instead of black used on the other two.

Also, Will Perry making his presenting debut on sports bulletins from Salford. He normally does the sport on 5 Live. Will is much better than many of the new sports presenters they employed since moving to Salford. They should use him more - this applies to George Riley, also on 5 Live. This shot here also looks slightly brighter than the other side.

That third plasma looks like the original screen that was replaced with a black edged one. You can see the screen burn which caused it to be replaced.

Oh yes, you just made me notice that. Very shoddy that they didn't get rid of it completely. A better, brighter cap from this hour's Sportsday just to show you how bright the newsroom is.

These 'face' mikes they've been using, apart from being able to be hands free, what's the big difference between those & lapel mikes technically?

They're much closer to the sound source (i.e. the mouth) than lapel mics - so in noisy situations they perform far better (as the person's voice is much louder relative to background noise the closer the mic is to the mouth).

They're much more popular on general chat shows in other parts of Europe - in the UK we mainly use them in noisy situations like sports stadia.

Ahem, oops.
News Channel live in 'The City' at a stockbrokers, ready for the interest rate announcement at noon - camera zooms in to the data terminal to see what it's going to be, and bang on midday, the line drops.

Thus demonstrating the pitfalls of automatically routing on a schedule - it's only as good as the data you put into it!

Just watched a DTL on the News Channel from Edinburgh. I was surprised to see that they still use those blinds of Edinburgh Castle as the back drop. Now I know we could say if it ain't broke an all that but I can't help but feel this looks very old fashioned....maybe it's just me.
