Can someone explain to me why they have two presenters sitting idle in the studio whilst the Leveson Inquiry is being shown? Yesterday between the hours of 11:00-14:00 they had Ben Brown and Jane Hill sitting in N6, with Matthew Amroliwala on location at the Crown Court, whilst the Leveson Inquiry was being shown for most of their shift. Surely just one presenter in the studio, in case any other news had broken, with Matthew on location would have sufficed? I suppose the same is happening today. They could have even got away with having just one studio-based presenter on the 08:30-11:00/14:00-17:00 shifts yesterday as well. Of course, I'm not taking into account all the other work they do when these presenters are not on air, but it all just seems a bit pointless to me having two studio-based presenters, whilst Matthew's on location.

And why is Matthew on location anyway, when they already have Ross Hawkins who's been reporting mostly on the inquiry since it started? Many times yesterday it was a case of 'reporter interviewing reporter', with Matthew interviewing Ross on the spot.

Anyone agree?

I thought it was one of the bizarre requirements of the BBC trust, which they've just asked to have removed?

In short, Dan S, yes I do agree with you.

Does anyone know why it's classed as "Breaking News" the Murdochs being at Leveson?

When I was watching yesterday and today it was classed as breaking, but given it was announced earlier I don't get how it can be classed as breaking news.

Also, why are they showing the majority of it on the news channel, why couldn't they use BBC Parliament or similar?

As Dan S says it seems a bit pointless having the presenters there but not using them.

They couldn't use BBC Parliament for this as the House of Commons is sitting and we've had a heated PMQs today, as well as a statement from Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, neither of which could be guaranteed coverage on the BBC News Channel today.

Also, in case the feed were to suddenly drop from Leveson, they need the two presenters in the studio to carry on normal style programming. Also, the breaks in the hearing have to be covered too.

I notice that the News channel just played Nicholas Witchell's Report and they showed Rupert Murdoch's Land Rover arriving at the Royal Courts of Justice and they had blurred his car's number plate.

However, before that report, they showed his Land Rover leaving the Court without the number plate blurred at all and in full shot of the camera.

I agree with the breaking news point. 9/10 times when I watch BBC News they seem to have breaking news with the red ticker and it stays this way even though there are no developments.

Well since those presenters are at their work doing their job they might as well sit in the studio like they would on any other day.

I'd agree in a way, but Ben Brown has covered Matthew on the 11am shift, meaning Tim and whoever else has been brought in to do the evening shift. If Jane had been left on her own, there wouldn't be a need to pay another presenter to come in and cover.

Interesting open to the News at 5 tonight. Huw started talking to the camera that pans at the TOTH with an opening sentence and an Economy graphic on the Barco far wall. As soon as he finished the first sentence, they switched to the top body, single presenter shot... and Huw finished what he was saying. Never seen that before.

Did anyone cap it?

To be honest, I don't know why they send presenters out on location when they already have reporters there. I know it might be to add some gravitas (ie. Jon Sopel in Paris) and probably to make it more interesting to watch, but I really just don't see the point. They already have Ross Hawkins at the Leveson Inquiry, why do they feel the need to send Matthew out as well, when he and other presenters are just as capable of presenting it from the nice, warm studio. They should have kept Matthew in the studio, saving the need and cost for Tim to come in and cover the evening shift. I think it was reported a while back that they will be starting to scale down the number of presenters reporting on location, this can only be a good thing in my opinion.

*Rant over*

I didn't cap it but the same thing happened on yesterday's News at Five.
