Thanks for the clips, Rob.

Not to go off topic, but I suspect Susanna Reid is another of these presenters who's better suited to straight news than lighter Breakfast-like broadcasting.

Interesting to see a branch of WH Smith outside TVC Stage Door in that clip!
(There's a WHS inside the building now - perhaps it was being renovated at the time?)

The other interesting thing about that clip is yet another headline bed at the incorrect pitch! What was going on at BBC News back then?! Laughing

I thought the same thing, House. It's been years since I last saw that clip and I was surprised by how much her presenting style has changed since moving on to Breakfast. For those of you who argue that she doesn't have a patronising style, take a look at that clip.............

Thanks again for those clips, Rob. Never knew the 2003-06 era of N24 had a Breaking News splash! Me thinks they should do something more innovative now for when they have Breaking News. Didn't they use a sting or something for Breaking News at the start of the 2008 era, same as they did in the 2007 version of News 24? Wonder why it was dropped?

There's information on TV Home's News 24 section regarding the need to compete with Sky with regards to breaking news. This was seen as one of the answers. Back then, breaking news actually was breaking news, compared to now when things that happened hours ago are still deemed 'breaking'; it's too much of a gimmick now. If we had a sting every time 'Breaking News' happened on the channel now, it would be a nightmare to watch.

I loved that 2003-2008 era. I'm not one for shouting for standing presenters, but you can see just from these short clips that presentation was much more varied in comparison to today's quite stuffy, N6-caged BBC News Channel. The graphics from 2007 were better, but the variation of presentation was even declining then. N8 was just a fanastic home to a news channel in those days, and still is for World today. Hopefully we'll get the same energy back with the Broadcasting House move.

One thing that has also made me think about with regards to World/News 24 simulcasts is the 2008 name changes did provide much more continuity over-nights and when simulcasts are needed. BBC World News and BBC News are names that can be much more easily interchanged compared to BBC World and BBC News 24.

Peter Dobbie and Maxine Mawhinney in N8 at 6pm. World News and the News Channel simulcasting.

I presume this is because the BBC1 bulletin is 18:20-18:35, and the French election special starts at 18:30, so there's no disruption.

The BBC News Channel is currently simulcasting with BBC World for the French elections - but while World did their break, Annita McVeigh did a summary from N8 for the NC - no weather update at all. The fact that she's on the opposite side of the desk suggests there is a World News presenter there on standby.

Did the BBC News Channel clock disappear on screen between 1820 & 1835, like it did during the Whitney Houston funeral, as BBC One was using N6 itself?

It went on and off between around 1815 and 1830. Was definitely on at some point whilst the national news was on BBC One.

That's interesting. Thought as NC would still go through N6's desk, to add the clock & ticker, it would go off?
